What Jobs Are We Doing In The Garden Today 2020

Most of our time is taken up with clearing, cutting back, weeding, leaf clearing etc.

We dug out the last of the compost in this heap and it filled ten barrows


The heap next to it was getting a bit full even with bashing it down with the plank


So we have started taking the top off the heap and putting it in the empty one.


Work in progress - and we shall shift more over when we have compressed what we have already moved


We've also dug out all the good compost from the next heap and that's also ready for taking new leaves, grass etc.


There are still two other heaps that have been maturing for a couple of years that will be spread around the garden.

We rolled back the weed suppresant (after removing the last of the bean plants) dug over the area, composted and pinned the suppresant back down. It's the last of the covered areas that needed doing


Made a separate area for the left over brassica plants that someone dropped into us but don't know if they'll do any good. We don't normally bother with brassicas. Don't even know what these are!


Dug out and filled in the 18" wide hole under the fence that the rabbits had made and the badgers have been using and buried this vertically. That's the fourth section of wire we have put in and if they move further along the fence the neighbour might actually do something from his side as they will now be digging in his lawn. He didn't care before because the holes they were making were behind some shrubs and they weren't destroying any of the plants in his garden as they find our garden a gourmet restaurant. We've rebuilt our rabbit and deer fence the other side of the garden that was destroyed by a 70ft poplar falling through it.


There were no plants in this section, where they came under the fence, as they had all been dug out by the rabbits.


Grass cutting goes on as usual. By the time I've cut all the lawns I have to start again. That's because I can't mow for much more than an hour at a time. I mow and then trim the edges.

 

I feel I should have been posting more on here... Today I'll be planting out a yew hedge that arrived unexpectedly yesterday.
Recently have been creating a new herb garden and started the veg beds. Haven't started one of for years so pondering what to do for a great start, probably dump as much compost at the bottom as I can find and place the tumbled mud on top. Ground is like iron after the compaction of diggers and 6 months of scaffolding, workers etc and plenty of stones to contend with too!
Veg beds are currently planned at six 1x2m beds but they look quite tiny once the ground has been scalped of turf so might increase them at some point.

 

Hedge is in despite best efforts of 3 year old Oscar to 'help'...

 

The day, again, was dry, no breeze, but only in the lower 50f's temperatures so I got down on my knees again and started searching for space to plant the nearly 500 Tulip bulbs, 200 Crocus bulbs and around 100 Daffodil bulbs, which I did, but still have a sackful of last Spring's Tete-a-Tete Daffodils to plant. I think they will go into the front garden border where the row of eight Lavender bushes are planted.
So I spent around 4 hours in the garden planting bulbs on top of other previously, over the years, planted bulbs. There's also a patch of left alone ground at the bottom of the "walk around" border where Ivy and creeping Buttercup has started to cover the bulbs of the hundreds of Snowdrops that are there so they, the Ivy and Buttercups, have had to go. I intend to replant, during the Spring, that area with some more Hardy Perennials such as Echinops, Leucanthemums. Eryngiums, Astilbes, and maybe one or two bi-annuals such as Digitalis.
Tomorrow the main job is to sort and tidy up the Green House while I contemplate whether or not to make space for some large buckets in which to grown some Tomatoes. I still have another path on the East side of the garden to clean and clear, while also clearing plant debris from the borders. I might also construct a Chicken Wire enclosure down by the bottom of the garden to compost all the leaves that are lying deep around that area and make some Leaf Mould.....but that's tomorrow
