Eventually came to my senses. Don't like taking too many painkillers. So returned to my homeopathic medicine cupboard. One Rhus Tox tablet, five minutes later pain gone. Talk about, physician heal thyself.

Yestutday made concerted effort to get into garden and pot-up new roses. Did one and it poured down. Bad back pain due to none activity for some time.

Today planned to try again with potting roses. Oh no. Raining heavy again. Soon stopped. No time wasted, and all roses potted up. I went back in doors giving myself a proverbial pat on the back.

Good weather here today so got some jobs done. Finally finished cutting the Rosa rugosa bed (about 20' x 4') down to 9" high and then clearing all the leaves, debris and weeds. Also had the lovely job of clearing out the drain from the kitchen sink. The fats etc. build up over a period of time (even though we try not to let fats go down the sink) and go solid. As we're not on mains drainage I have to be careful about it. There's a boxing over the drain area that has to be removed first which is a strain on my back :old: but it went fairly easily this time :). Everything gone into the bin for the binmen tomorrow. :blue thumb:

i also cleared all the fallen leaves from 20 hardy alpine pots.

Just ordered online some 15Ltr pots. Ten for £16+ I think that's cheap. B&Q cost the earth. I ususally deal with Oakwood Gardens, but at the mo, they don't appear to be advertising on ebay.

Yes it's very important to keep feeders and bird baths clean. I've had finches suffering and dying from this disease this year and also lost the four Yellowhammers that visited the garden. Pigeons and larger birds seem to have remained healthy.

Trichomonosis | BTO - British Trust for Ornithology

It's a cruel disease and birds suffer for days before they succumb. With each bout I closed down my feeding station and bird bath completely for the three recommended weeks and disinfected both. Birds fly from garden to garden in search of food so it's possible it's being picked up from other places. It is most prevalent when birds are rearing and feeding their young so it's important not only to keep a close eye on them but to "up" cleaning at this time.

I really missed the birds visiting but it's a case of being, or seeming to be cruel to be kind.

first time on the forum so not sure where to post messages. can anyone recommend a good variety of sprout for next year. having waited 6 months for my sprouts although i got good height and foliage the sprouts were very poor. its very annoying to give up space and time to have a poor harvest. the chickens enjoyed the leaves so not all lost

Moved a baby oak tree in the garden today. Only about a metre tall but still had a very strong root and must be over two years old I think and maybe three. No space for it where it sprouted so it had to go somewhere else and found a good spot for it on the edge of the wildest area of the garden that is dominated by brambles so hope it will eventually help keep them a bit under control. Also dug out some rooted guelder rose lower branches/suckers and put the biggest section of these in the hole the oak sapling came out of and planted the others in a few areas of the garden that have no guelder rose growing before now as I think it is a plant well worth having a few more of. Lots of rain forecast, so a good time for moving things about.
                    Happy gardening!

I've now started on getting the fallen leaves out of all the plant pots. It's not a job that I like doing as it entails a lot of bending so I'm aiming at doing about 50 pots per day. Should be finished by February. :fingers crossed:

Thanks @noisette47 I have a hand rake etc. but these pots need the leaves taken out carefully by hand so that I don't disturb the new growth, or need to extract the dead leaves from the foliage of the plants. It's the willow leaves that seem to get themselves stuck into everything.

Installed some trellis - to make a sort of porch area before entering the back garden - from the back gate. Planning to make some troughs and planting honeysuckle halliana to climb over the trellis. The ground under the patio is solid clay - nothing will grow in it unfortunately.

                              That's a great idea @clanless :)

@shiney I wonder if you could vacuum the leaves up, I do it sometimes to my Euphorbia milii when they get inside the spiny stems.

A nice idea but not practical in our situation. A lot of the pots have young plants and the wet soggy leaves need picking out carefully. A large part of our pots in the nursery areas need more careful looking after. We have something over 2,000 pots! :rolleyespink:
