What Jobs Are We Doing In The Garden Today 2020

Raking leaves, and burning them.

 

They need pulling out, not putting in!!!!!!!
I've done nowt as it's still too cold. I think that all this time in London is turning me into a right jessie!

 

Two dry and sunny days on the trot now there's a novelty spent most of the day repotting, slowly but surely catching up on things.

 

Sweeping up paths and decking round house, then weeding (including removing forget-me-nots; they get everywhere), or if the ground is fit preparing bed for onion sets.

 

Dug over my Dad's wildlife plot again, in the last fortnight the weeds seemed to have woken up from their dormancy period. Removed loads more G E root runners and noticed his borders are beginning to fill up with the dreaded weed too .....and so another year begins!!!

 

Spent the morning weeding. Its the first time Ive weeded this year and I was surprised how wet the soil is, given that we are half way up a hill the soil is fairly free draining. Ive got a couple of sacks full of weeds and still plenty more to have a go at.

This will be the fourth season that Ive done all of the weeding. Previously we had gardeners to help out as I didn't have the free time. It has become apparent that they didn't do a great job as the weeding is gradually becoming less of a task.

 

I know the feeling about gardeners not doing a good job too @andrews ...my Mum would be heartbroken at how G E has been allowed to take over her beautiful garden. I don't blame my Dad bless him he's have several gardeners over the years since we lost Mum and some were highly recommend from a very good source too..and highly expensive!!

 

I had a full day in the garden for a change. The lawn had its first cut of the year. I cracked on with the swing area.



As with all my DIY projects, I discover an easy way to do something long after I have committed to doing it the hard way. I never know how to dig a trench. My usual routine is to dig out a lot of soil until I think I've taken enough (or I get bored with it). I then mark my corners with posts at ground level and measure down to my desired depth. I then backfill the soil. It sort of works but is really hard and takes forever.

Next time I will mark the spade with the desired depth. That way I will know how far down to dig. That has to be easier.

When I marked my corners, I used the inner edges of my post to guide the strings. Next time I will use the outer edges. That way I can leave the pegs in place permanently. All I would have to do is cut off the string and tap them down.

Everything is easier in retrospect.

I was hoping to carry on with it tomorrow but it looks like we might have to go visiting.

Continue weeding, prune dogwoods, remove surplus Arum italicum.
Sow seeds of Dicentra scandens and Dahlia merckii.

 

Transplanted my Thymus fragrantissimus to a wooden tub to use the pot it was in for my Aubrieta 'Red Cascade', planted 'Blue Cascade' in a similar pot and gave them all a light watering. Pruned my 'Margaret Merril' floribunda rose yesterday. Picked my first (intact) Viola odorata 'The Czar' flower, the slugs have been munching them, must get some copper piping to keep the little sods off! Aah, smells even sweeter than it looks!

In between the showers/high wind I sowed 3 grow bags with seed Potatoes (Winston) Ok its a little early but being near the coast we have little frost. I couldn't do anymore as my back was starting to hurt..........God it was nice to after.
