Yesterday I cut some of the grass in the side garden and pulled some very long brambles out of the Hawthorne hedge with the aid of my loppers. Pruned two more Hydrangeas and fed them. Watered a couple of dry pots. Cleaned out one of the bird baths and the :hhog: feeding station. I don't who it is but someone is leaving enormous piles of:poo:in the feeder and the entrance tunnel and in the food bowl :eeew:. Dirty little varmit.

After gardening I got out a zero, a book and some nibbles. I had just settled in, no more than 4-5 minutes and one of the male Chaffinch arrived. He stood on the patio wall, around 3-4 feet away and proceeded to shout at the top of his voice to any females around. It was very loud and quite piercing. I turned around to glare at him, thinking he'd get the message and take it someplace else. He just bobbed his head at me, I'm sure he was laughing, and carried on for another 10-15 mins or so.

I planted 3 Pavaver Patty's Plum in the borders, cut a large Hellebore back in the West Border as it was smothering a young Hydrangea. Grabbing a Thalictrum in a pot I ambled down to the border that runs along the Wildlife Pond hedge and planted it near another Thalictrum that has been there for around 8 years. I realised that a Bergenia "Ice and Flame" that I had was also the right plant for that border so I planted
      that into there.
I'm slowly trying to find places for the Hardy Perennials that are on the table on the Patio
      upload_2020-4-8_22-42-46.png
So I got 3 "Magic Lantern" Lupins and found enough space to plant them in the border by the lawn.
I hoping that 4 Fox Tail Lilies that I've ordered from Burcoose Nursery, 2 Bearded Iris, a Day Lily, Knifophia, and an Astilbe from Farmer Gracy will arrive tomorrow. The two Bearded Iris will go into two large pots along with another 3 (Black Satin), that are sitting in 3 3 litre plastic pots on the Patio going into other large pots. That will, I hope, be the last Bearded Iris I buy this year, although I'm not guaranteeing it.
I've also got plans for tomorrow to mow the front lawn and also the House next to me as it is empty at the moment with the new owner not able to move in until the Lock Down finishes. So there's still plenty to do.:dunno::cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

Today, dig in green manure on veg plot, lift last leeks and parsnips. Plant out young vegetable plants, sow carrot seed and a few beetroot.
        Weed raised bed.

Yesterday, I potted on some Delphiniums and Dianthus. Put some self seeded Foxgloves into trays to grow on. Gave everything a good water.

                  Hi All,

I am prepping bed for root veg. I know that manure can cause forking of carrots. What is the best way to give it a feed? Will home made compost do the same as manure??

All I'd do give the soil a little sprinkle of Bonemeal before sowing.:blue thumb:

I wouldn't put anything in the soil for root veg.You could try a soluble high potash fertiliser when you have to water, beetroot are the same.

Cut back lots of ivy and bramble (wow, I can actually see and access my water butt now!:heehee:) planted Erysimum 'Bowles's Mauve', Veronicastrum 'Fascination' and heucheras in the borders, removed a large sapling that was obstructing access to the water butt. Was pleased to discover that my Salvia 'Caradonna' and Fuchsia 'Mrs Popple' have new shoots on them. My Achillea 'Colorado Mix' is settling in and has some lovely lush growth on it, will probably get to see all the different flower colours this year, only saw 3 of them last year as it was struggling in a 9cm pot and on offer at the local GC and had only just been planted! :)

Finally managed to photograph an Orange-tip drinking from one of my aubrietas (), tho not very well, as you can see! :heehee:

I've been doing the usual moving of the sprinkler and then have spent ages working on a bed that is full of couch grass amongst all the plants. I did 40sq ft before my back told me to stop.

Mrs S has been sowing 100 runner bean seeds (only about 400+ to go) and may start on the first wave of French beans. I'll have to give her a hand making room in the greenhouse for them. I'll start by moving out the Eucomis plants (Pineapple Lily) that @pete gave us some years ago.
