Just watered in the heated greenhouse and re-covered the cold frames. I wanted the areas under the frames to get some of last night and this mornings rainfall but we are expecting snow tomorrow and Thursday. Being superstitious (half heartedly:whistle:) I left the shovel by the back door to scare off any more snow. :heehee:

Been potting on tomatoes today - Gardeners delight.
Yesterday I was spray painting the fence after seeing the good job that @Temmy was doing. Unfortunately concentrating on where I was spraying, I didn't notice where I was standing, and stepped on a nail in a broken pallet (that I hadn't got rid of since the recycling centre is shut!). Went straight through my welly and stuck in my toe. I pulled it out and thought TCP was enough, but my daughter nagged me to call 111 who suggested I got straight to A&E or Minor Injuries. It was very weird going to the hospital - no-one around, and massive signs and warning tape everywhere. But the lovely nurses checked it, gave me penicillin, and got me out in 10 minutes! Hooray for the NHS!

@CarolineL I my heart went in my throat when I read your post. Glad you got it taken care of. :grphg:

About 20 years ago I stepped out into the garage, with sneakers on, and stepped on a 5 foot piece of baseboard, lengthwise, with a nail in it. I had a heck of a time getting it pulled out as it had gone right up through the top. I probably looked like a scene out of an old Oliver and Hardy movie. Luckily I'd had a tetanus shot in the last ten years so it was just of matter of time for it to heal. Didn't even hurt after couple of days.:)

              But is still unnerving!:yikes:

The lack of a cool breeze made even today's temperature of 59f seem quite warm so I took a empty garden sack and a small brush down to the Wildlife pond area and started to sweep the hard paved area which always seems to be a magnet for plant leaves and debris and dirt. I filled half a sackful before I had finished cleaning up the area and then filled it by clearing up the leaf and debris at the entrance to the pond. I cut off the last years dead growth of all the Ferns on the banks and uncovered the new fronds for this year which is always full of promise of adding a gentle green around the pond. The bench by the pond has been there since the 90's but is still in great condition due to a yearly brushing of Linseed Oil

I took the full sack up to the Patio ready for emptying onto the Compost Bins and then returned back to the pond area to tie even more of the Clematis growing along the pond fence.

I also cleaned up the stone seat which Sally and Jenny my last two Cats used to love sitting and lying on in the Sun.....happy memories:cat-kittyandsmiley:

I'm really glad I planted so many Tulips as they're steadily coming into flower and bring a smile to my face where ever I'm sitting in the garden

While the colour of the Acer Brilliantissismun's new leaves always catches my eyes where ever I working in the garden.

I took a break and then gave all 50 or so Bearded Iris in the large pots on the Patio their weekly organic feed using the four Watering Cans more than a couple of times.
And then I planted two Peony Duchess de la Nemour in the lower part of the garden where there were already 5 other Peonies, so there should be quite a show down there for a while.:heehee:

                upload_2020-4-14_22-28-59.png

And then it was time to water everything in the Green House, the borders and the lawn which I did and then I headed for the House and a sit down.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

Two Newts in my pond now . I've noticed over the past few weeks ( post Tadpole ) that the snails and pond larvae has been declining. There just appears to be some Ramshorn snails left. I netted yesterday to pull out blanket weed and both Newts came up together in the net. So I'm assuming they will continue to strip my pond until it is devoid of life. I'm also assuming these two are male and female and will make lots of baby Newts with equally voracious appetites. A third assumption is that having firmly ensconced themselves they ( and any progeny ) will not wish to vacate and will eat any future larvae/eggs/babies, etc that appear in my pond. And whilst that may be the circle of life it could lead (potentially ) to knock on effects.

I don't know when the Newts discovered the pond. Last summer the pond was teeming with life. I noticed a slight drop off in autumn and thought this was due to hibernation or lying low at the bottom of the pond for the winter months. I also found snail shells on the top of pond plant pots and along the edges of the pond. Assumed birds. I vaguely remember saying to R sometime late summer (can't remember when exactly) that when I walked past the pond one day I caught a flash of silver. I did stop for a closer look but didn't poke about as didn't want to disturb anything. I thought I had probably imagined it but now I'm not so sure. A larger pond may be the solution but could also attract more Newts leading to more competition for food.

Did more work on the cherry tree flower bed. Re planted some of the original plants but in different positions plus a few other new one. The bed is bone dry, soil is like sand as no rainfall for a few weeks and tree sucking up moisture too. The plants in the bed are drought tolerant. I added what mulch I had left and raked through. Need more mulch. Gave the bed and a few pots a really good watering.

Put some grass seed down at weekend, now having to water 5/6 times per day, need to get another sprinkler and connect them up to the water timer. Gladys are up 6/7" in pots, and Dahlia's that were just put out last week are just showing, so will be taking cutting soon, ordered a load of seed from Uk suppliers, the ones I have used here In France are not even doing postal delivery.

Quick snap through my study window hence the poor quality . The trees to the left and right of the eucalyptus are his pines. There are loads of them - too many really. If it was my garden I'd remove at least half of them.
