Good weather today, so cracking on with planting a few more bulbs, sowing broad beans and sweet peas in root trainers, garlic to go straight into the veg plot. Also some work to be done on the new compost heap and continuing to tidy up greenhouse.

The Katsura, red leafed above, was a baby of this one
      P1300632.JPG

and was dug out from here (already put a couple of plants to replace it)
      P1300631.JPG

Which is part of the new 54ft bed which we made after we removed 22 Leylandii 18 months ago
      P1300634.JPG

It's surprising how quickly a bed can become established.

This is the next Leycesteria to need removing (from a cutting in a 3" pot 18 months ago!)

Made the most of a dry, mild weekend and got a few more jobs done.

Gave the 'wild' long grass areas their second and final cut and rake for the year yesterday, didn't take long as they've put on little growth since the first cut at the end of July.

Mowed and edged the lawn (still growing slowly despite the dry conditions), also removed a small branch from my variegated Norway Maple tree, as it was showing signs of reversion.

Cut down and shredded a couple of small clumps of Goldenrod before they seed everywhere, did a little leaf raking and sweeping here and there.

Today, watered and fed all the pots and containers, still needing to do this a couple of times a week as it's been so warm and dry here.

Pulled up the last of the courgette plants, which has finally ground to a halt.

Spread a load of lovely home made compost on the veg patch, ready for digging in next spring. :)

Not much today as I was in Manchester for most of the day, but over the weekend I finished a pathway, with steps, around the Green House to the East Border. My soil is pretty easy to dig, so laying the concrete slabs was not a problem. I used the left over large cobbles from the Observatory base as the Risers for the steps and they've made the path steps very stable and solid, so I'm pleased with the result.
I continued with my plan to divide and reduce most of the long established hardy perennials in the borders. So I reduced two clumps of perennial Geraniums to two small clumps so that they can start again. Then I dug up my Rhubarb which had become weaker in the site where it's been for about 6 years. I took an outer "new" Rhubarb crown from the old clump and finding a new site for it planted and watered it in. Now I've got my eye on a big clump of Japanese Pink Anemones at the bottom of the "walk around" border where they've been for around 10 or more years. I''ll reduce them down to less than a quarter of the present size to give them a fresh start like the Geraniums.:coffee::snorky:

Didn't have much time to do anything in the garden yesterday as I had to go to London. When I got back I did some mowing of grass and leaves. Doesn't sound a lot when said like that! :heehee:

Nipped into Homebase, lots of half price plant food didnt need any. Bought some small straw bales on the way home to get things ready for winter.
Wrapped the big treefern that stays out all winter, should be fine now with its new winter coat.the rest got some fleece stuffed into their necks, should be OK for now.

Bought some nice rubrum grasses for next year.

Today was a leaf clearing day and we collected the leaves in cubic yard bags as it's easier than using the wheel barrow. We filled it six times and emptied it on the compost heaps.

                  Lots more to go :phew:

Also cut all the blackberry bushes back.

                  My back hurts! :heehee:

I feel so lazy compared. Took the halloween decs down and cleared up some presents off the cats.. yuck. Bought one bag of £1 compost in Tesco, couldn't leave it there on its own, so that was dumped on the front bed.
Had to get different leaves for little one's homework, so went to the local park and bagged some up along with berries, chestnuts, twigs and a few conkers. Found loads of different mushrooms too.

Not a lot today but over the last couple of days planted 2 Choisyas in wrought iron containers , and 4 Potentillas in a large tub, still got a Forsythia and Sarcocca , to do thanks to The Range selling their shrubs off :) .

Still waiting for my black Hyacinths from T&M, already decided not to order plants from them but am now debating whether to ever order owt from them again.

PS..... Forgot to say planted 150 Dutch Iris .

I stopped ordering from them a couple of years ago, after some begonia plugs arrived in July, miniscule and tatty, started using Van Meuwen, turns out the same firm :wallbanging:, just different packaging, BUT, they are doing okay with the few bits I have been tempted by.

Yesterday we did more clearing, digging, weeding, composting and transplanting. All compost heaps now emptied (except for new ones) and when we go and get our next batch of horse manure we shall mix it with the newer grass cuttings and tons of leaves and split them into two compost heaps.

Had a giant bonfire and whilst it was going we cut back all the roses and burnt the cuttings. Picked more apples and pears, and generally pottered around.

                            So not much, really :heehee:

Planted the pear, apple and cherry trees.
Know it's really not the best time but chucked 2 hydrangeas, 2 hot pokers, an aquilegia, a fuchsia, 5 bearded iris (that should of been planted long, long ago), a salvia and moved a coreopsis and some achillea from the front bed all in to the new border. I just didnt want to see a load of bulbs popping up with nothing else there..
Also thrown in 3 peonies which were salvaged from my sisters' neighbours' garden, they must be at least 25 years old.. my parents, sister and I used to lived there (in my sisters' house) and used to call the neighbour Aunty Thelma, house has been empty for years and just recently sold so the builders have moved in and made a mess on the front garden.. felt like I had to dig them up before they were gone forever.

Even more digging and clearing. Kept yesterday's bonfire going all day today (still burning) and chucked nasty weeds on it whilst doing the weeding.

Mrs Shiney dug up loads more plants and split them and potted them up. Then sold a lot of them, mainly Bowles Golden Grass and Euphorbias, for the charity.
