What jobs are we doing in the garden today, autumn 2016

@shiney is it ok to prune apple trees now? First time i will be doing it this year-using a book to guide me and hoping I wont kill it! It's a bramley.

 

A bit behind as usual ! Going to lift my Cactus Dahlia tubers today . Hope I am not to late ? It is very mild now , but we have had a few frosty days. I have left all the stems and growth on , which are now black . So hopefully that should have protected them.

 

How did you build your compost bins. I still haven't finalised how to do mine.

Thanks @shiney , I noticed some fluffy silvery buds growing-have I left it too late??

It seems really tangled and I wanted to thin it out a bit. I didn't think the crop from it was that great-i noticed a lot of the apples, whilst they got quite big, had earwigs etc

Chucked my trees in pots (and the frozen/unfrozen one.. praying I didn't damage it) with some compost day before yesterday. Cannot be bothered to dig in the wet and cold, I'll wait until spring!

Yes, I've actually being doing a few jobs in the garden today.

The autumn sown broad beans have germinated and are poking through the soil now. I'd laid some wire netting over them to prevent cats/foxes/blackbirds etc. digging up the freshly tilled earth and disturbing them, but something else was needed now, as once the leaves open out I won't be able to remove the wire netting without uprooting the beans.

So I banged a few short stakes in the ground and rigged up some netting (it's actually an old hockey goal net) which will protect them until they're bigger.

Wondering whether I should have posted this in the 'You know you're an obsessive gardener when...' thread now.

 

Most i've done in the garden this week is put my hand inside the potato clamp and hope there wasn't a girt slug in there

One spud was doing its best to turn into a plant, but most of them are fine

Pulled out some Pink Fir Apples and Charlottes for Christmas lunch :gbh:

 

I finished constructing the raised bed - the one which goes around the back of the arbour.

I am again determined this year not to lounge about during the Xmas/New Year break.

 

Just washed the greenhouse with Jeyes fluid.
