      Time will tell Dorothy,
I haven't intended to kill it. I think it will forgive me, especially if I sprinkle some blood, fish and bone meal around it,

Ah I see. I have just chopped down a shrub which I hate. I has just a few yellow flowers in spring for a few weeks and then grows like mad all summer. I'm forever cut it back to stop the shade on my grass. So I decided last week it just had to go.So I'm hoping I've killed it:snork:

Tried to mark out an Ellipse ... two sticks and a loop of string. Even found a website that enabled me to calculate the distance between the sticks and the length of the piece of string.

So much for the advanced maths calculations ... it took ages, of trial-and-error, and still wasn't right ...

As you know, I'm definitely not a DIY person but I love maths. I would have worked out the approx length and width of the required ellipse. Then put two posts a short distance inside the outer boundary of the long side and a post at the centre of one of the narrow sides. Then fix a string to one of the long side posts and run it around the narrow side post and fix it to the third post. Then remove the post in the narrow side.

You should now be able to place a marker where the post was and run it round the ellipse by sliding it along the string whilst keeping it taut. :blue thumb: I've not tried it but it seems to work in my head :heehee:

I started marking out where i want to extend my borders, decided not to go with rounded sweeps :dunno: as my garden is like a triangle with a point chopped off. So was thinking of < shapes to keep the angular look, my front border is 40" long so about 6 I think as I have a couple of trees in my lawn so cannot make them too deep.

An ellipse is simple as I recall (from Tech.Drawing).

Mark two lines at right angles to each other. Mark the centre radius and work out and mark the two end radii. Divide each of the two lines an equal number of times (ie; 16, 32, 64 etc), and draw right angles off of them. Where the lines meet is your arc points (this part is absolutely correct - it's 25 years since T.D.).

You guys make it sound complicated ... this is what I did - but getting the sticks the right distance apart, and the length of the string right, seemed to be harder than I had expected ...

That is my problem with my <, I measured carefully all the same size, then ended up wrong in the corner, so start at corner. I have my sticks and string all in place just need to check all the same now,,But its raining :gaah:

That's, more or less, what I described. The only difference was in my version you work out the length of your string by putting the 'marker pen' at the centre point of where you want the narrow side. Then make the length of the string to fit around your two pivots and the marker pen.

In the video they have already worked out the length of the string.

Potted up the clematis and passionflower (4 in total) that I bought from Morrisons for £2 each. Had meant to do it yesterday, but ran out of time. Mr Mum was mowing the front lawn so I thought I'd have a potter :heehee:

Looking at the sky, my timing is good because I think we're going to have a bit of a shower.
