I produce a lot of ash (at least six giant bonfires a year) and it gets spread around the garden in the veg plot, herb garden and flower beds.

I don't have fruit bushes and don't put it under the trees. The fruit trees are surrounded by cowslips, primulas, primroses, bee orchids etc and I'm not sure what effect the ash would have on them. Most of the trees are 40 - 60 years old.

Any advice would be appreciated :blue thumb:

Put it in the empty compost bags from potting for the Open Day and flog it then too!

Not directly in the garden, but I went out and brought a few seeds and plants...

        Seeds were..

Collomia coccinea 'neon' (ive never even heard of these)
        Eccremocarpus scaber 'tresco mix'
        Nemesia 'Carnival mix'
        Mesembryanthemum (Livingstone daisy)
        Mirabilis jalapa

        I also got three small plants;

        Convulvulus cneorum for a pot

        Escallonia iveyi

and some Santolina for the summer.

The best time to scatter the ash from the fruit production aspect would be late Spring when the flowers are in full bloom, so maybe not a good idea in your case.

Thanks, Kristen :blue thumb:. Not a bad idea but I'm not sure people would buy it and it involves me in extra work that is not good for my back  . It's a lot easier for me to throw the ash into a wheelbarrow and tip it on the garden than to carefully put it in sacks.

        Thanks, Dave :blue thumb:.

Putting a coat of wood preservative on my home-made Grow-bag containers - now in their fifth year and still going strong !

Second job - making a couple of potting trays out of scrap wood for use in the polytunnel at our community growing project.

Cut back the Virginia creeper, a clematis polish spirit and tidied up some hostas and heucheras. Went and got a bag of compost to sow the cannas tomorrow. Might go out later and do Abit more when I have fed and watered us both :)

Hi Everyone

Spruce happy today , lots of sunshine at last.
Greenhouse automatic window opened 1st time since late September.

Had a tidy around cut out the old wood from the red currants, gave the greenhouse a good airing , window just about closed now . Daylily's starting to re-sprout and lots of snowdrops should be open in the next day or two, like Simbad waiting for all the daylily seedlings to sprout lots of seeds from a member on here all named with both parents , people are so generous and it is appreciated .

Lawn still soaking wet and borders , we could all do with a dry week or two.

I have a ash tree in the front garden , its not that old and has always struggled to grow not the best spot between me and next door pavement and drives on either side , do I replace or leave as what everyone is saying its doomed anyway !! it was supplied by the house builder.

          Spruce

It's obviously not giving you any pleasure or satisfaction Spruce. Jenny says DIG IT OUT! And you are only following orders....
Plant something that you choose and like in its place.
          Simples,
          Jenny namaste

Out it comes then , any suggestions what to plant instead or best just leave knowing what damage roots can cause it was never the ideal spot to put a tree , but I was told it was on the plans and had to go in !!!
