If you have a open fire, remember that ash wood is the finest firewood there is - last lines from an old rhyme...
But ash logs, all smooth and grey,
    Burn them green or old;
Buy up all that come your way,
They're worth their weight in gold.

      Here you are:

Logs to Burn, Logs to burn, Logs to burn,
Logs to save the coal a turn,
Here's a word to make you wise,
When you hear the woodman's cries.

      Never heed his usual tale,
That he has good logs for sale,
But read these lines and really learn,
The proper kind of logs to burn.

Oak logs will warm you well,
      If they're old and dry.
Larch logs of pine will smell,
      But the sparks will fly.

      Beech logs for Christmas time,
      Yew logs heat well.
"Scotch" logs it is a crime,
      For anyone to sell.
Birch logs will burn too fast,
      Chestnut scarce at all.
Hawthorn logs are good to last,
If you cut them in the fall.

Holly logs will burn like wax,
      You should burn them green,
      Elm logs like smouldering flax,
      No flame to be seen.

      Pear logs and apple logs,
      They will scent your room,
      Cherry logs across the dogs,
      Smell like flowers in bloom

But ash logs, all smooth and grey,
      Burn them green or old;
Buy up all that come your way,
They're worth their weight in gold.

Finally taken out my Woodruff! the roots in my opinion had been strangling everything in sight for about 3 years! And made it near impossible for some plants to thrive. The roots were a nuisance, and quite difficult to get rid of, but I've done it.

Also rotated all the soil which the Woodruff was in, and added some compost to try and savor the area.

Under way at last! I've sown the first of my seeds today, those that need a spell in the cold, those which take a long time germinating and others that take a while to grow on.

Lupins, blue and pink, I'm trying white as well this year.

hi, im new to this site, and its our first year with a poly tunnel, we,v been growing fruit and veg for a few years now, had about as much luck as you could expect, with growing in outside conditions, and being a beginner, if the weather was bad the garden got neglected and the tv got a hammering, hopefully this year will be different with the tunnel, we put it up about a week ago, and i know i probably shouldnt be starting seeds now but i am, on the windowsil, and im keeping my fingers crossed that the frosts will have past by the time they are ready for the tunnel, maybe they will fail but theres plenty of time to start again, has anyone els starting this early on the windowsil and had much success, it would be nice to hear im not wasting my time.

we love a fire too, we,v used a big tin barrel thing for yrs, but its starting to crumble so we,v bough a little fire pit,it would be lovely if the wind would stop blowing the ashes around.

Took out a 6 ft conifer that is in the way of the new raised beds. Potted up some cyclamen I had forgotten about that I left in the plastic tomato grow house and sow some hay rattle into modules for the wild flower garden.

Did a little tidying up in the herbaceous border this afternoon.
Dug up a ropey old patch of asters (and several bulbs in the process) :doh:to make way for something else, lupins probably.
Quite a cold, grey afternoon, although by the time I'd got those asters out I had warmed up considerably. They're tenacious b*****s and they don't come out without putting up a fight. :phew:
