What jobs have you NOT done in the garden today

Was going to clean the flags with some cleaning chemicals, but didn't.. just swept it and gave up.

 

I know that feeling well Eddiej...gardening is supposed to be a pleasure but sometimes it becomes quite drainingdon't get me wrong i absolutley love it but i look forward to the warm weather so that i can sit back and really enjoy the garden...that doesn't work either for me ....just get sat down and think.....Mmm i'l just do' that 'first....need to chill....feel like the 'mad hatter' sometimes (think it was him) so little time ,so much to do.....no worries Eddie we'll get there

 

What is this life if,full of care, we have no time to stand and stare?
EddieJ I know how you feel, I went through similar feelings when my kids were young and I couldn't do what I wanted to do. somehow I got it in perspective- tried to cut down the more labour intensive stuff, tried to enjoy instead of rushing from job to job,but it wasn't easy. Realised I was my own worst taskmaster and critic.
I came back from holiday on Thursday, got up at 7 on Friday and walked around the place with a big cup of tea. I didn't weed, didn't mulch, didn't prick out my sprouts, but sat on the bench, listened to the birds, saw the geese fly over, and felt glad to be alive.

 

I didn't, but should have:

Hacked down the Spanish Bluebells - to reduce their vigour and hopefully kill them in a year or two.

Sowed my Leeks

Earthed up my early spuds, therefore they will have been blacked by last night's frost

Sowed some grass seed on the one bit of bare earth that I forgot to do when sowing grass seed for "various small renovated areas"

Got around to ordering some damp-proof-course-plastic to line my raised beds with

 

I was going to tidy up the lawn and lay new turf, but the hose pipe ban has relieved me of that task. Was also going to car boot my collection of old metal watering cans, but have also put that on hold.

 

I didn't do any of the garden jobs on my list because we had visitors and went to visit a stately home instead. As it happens, it was rather cold, blustery and rainy so I wouldn't have got much done anyway.

I knocked some things off the list today instead: started off dahlias and salvia patens, sowed successional plantings of mangetout, spring onions, radish and, um..... I'm sure there was something else

Off to my gardening club meet tomorrow and then I'll plant my "plants for pollinators" which I've been meaning to do for at least a week!

 

wife gave me a rountuit. Very pleased with it as I can now say i got rountuit and dont have to do it.
Jobs not yet done are sow seed,
Grass needs levelling,
Weeds need clearing from border,
Patio needed to be cleaned but as hose pipe ban in force no chance of that.
The only thing I have managed to do thus far is recover the cold frame with plastic and bubblewrap, so I can do very late sowings of seed.
Yet again it looks as if I shall be going to the garden centre to get plants for the border, and even veggies for the plot down the side.
Spend thrift is not what I live up to.
By the way has anyone got a spare goat for the lawn I forgot to add has not been cut yet.

 

A spare goat won't do any good Landimad, it'll eat everything else as well.

 

After being rained off at work today, I decided not to do any work in the garden and instead went over to my workshop to play. I feel much better and more relaxed for it.

This lump of wood is much bigger than it looks. It's approx 48" long x 18" wide x 12" deep. I also hope not to do any work in this garden this weekend and will just carry on playing.

This piece will be stood up right and the right hand side as shown in photos will become the base. I will probably taper the top down further from the shape as shown, but can't currently risk doing that as the quality of the oak is not that great and I don't want it splitting out.

Saturday was decent, dug up a bunch of extra Virginia Blue bells for a friend to put in her yard. Food shop, Laundry, some house cleaning. Back outside some weeding. Cooked dinner.
Sunday--rained all day, had planned to dead head all the tons of daffs. After pancakes and coffee Sorted through closets, got bags of clothes together to donate. Made supper. Relaxed more today. Monday soon will be here and off to work again.

 

What didn't I do? Mow that wretched lawn.

Mind you, I had every intention of doing so, but I watched a bit of the London Marathon (mainly to kill time waiting for the shops to open), then with my birthday present gardening vouchers in hand, went to the garden centre and bought a terracotta herb planter I'd seen the day before when I didn't have the vouchers with me. I then stopped off to buy some compost and some new herb plants. Came back, kneaded the bread and leaving that to rise, planted up the new planter, sorted out the existing herb 'garden' (a collection of pots, containers, wooden planters etc.) on the patio. Nipped in to put the bread in the oven, re-arranged the pots etc., on the patio, took the bread out of the oven, weeded between the paving, re-arranged the pots - again - swept up, re-cut some of the lawn edges, dumped the rubbish into one of the compost bins, 'stirred' the compost bins and .... while I was doing that, it started to rain and, since you can't use an electric mower in the rain, was 'forced' to postpone the very job I went out there to do!

 

Now the weather's turned wet I still can't turf the 'lawn' because I've sited my temporary greenhouse on the worst patch, and being put on a sheet of Mypex plus some pot trays on the other tatty bits, it's really tidied up that messy lawn no end.

 

What a well organised person you are Fidgetsmum!! I could visualise everything AND smell that lovely bread when you took it out....
Have you remembered the task you originally intended to do yet? The lovely thing about it all is
1) no one is there to observe and give you marks out of 10 (upon which your promotion may depend).
2) that satisfying feeling you get when you do it
3) that feel good factor you have now bosting to us all how superhuman youv'e been !
4) It ain't dementia kicking in if you forgot what you went out there for. It'll make itself known before long
