Thank you very much, we are pleased but there are still problems to overcome yet, The tree is an old pear tree mayflower, we were going to have it removed aswell but im so glad i decided not to, it gives the garden a bit of character. It is about to flower and is quite exciting, something doing something at last. Thanks for all the kind words it has inspired me to keep going.

Started work on the new picnic table/bench today.

Unfortunately, rain stopped play but at least i know how big it will be now.. about 8ft 8" across!

It should comfortably seat 6 adults and at least 6 children. Here`s a pic of the progress so far.

There will be 3 hexagonal "rings" altogether making up the bench part, only the outermost one is shown in the pic.

The table (6ft across) fits to the top of the uprights supported by another hexagonal frame.

The slatted tabletop will made up of ever smaller hexagonal rings, finishing with a small hexagon at the center, at least that`s the idea.

Could really do with some nice weather.

;) Very nice Hex..that's a perfect design to get maximum bums at the same bench, and easy reach to any drinks..oh,and food of course..
Did you design it or is in kit form?..I rather fancy one of those!

    Hi Paladin,

It`s a modified version of this one:
    http://www.buildeazy.com/hex_table.html

I got some inspiration from this site too:
    http://www.fitzski.com/galleries/200504-picnic.table/index.htm

My miter saw can`t handle the 30 degree mitres with 6" wide timber,so i modded the dimensions to use a 3.5" width.
The overall size is about the same, but there are more rails so it will look cosmetically different.
There is some addition diagonal braces from the seating hex frame to the bottom of the legs for extra strength.

I added the center hubs to allow 2.4m lengths of timber to be used with minimal waste, plus it packs down to a more compact size.

You`ll need about 26 lengths of timber in all..about 208ft.
