Cherry blossom is coming to an end now which is why, if it's a cherry they are disappearing. Are there any other cherries in your neighbourhood? To bear fruit it will need pollinating and another tree within a short distance if not in your garden will be necessary.

I've been thinking a little more about the shape of it, whatever the type of tree and it's looking increasingly like a cherry, I think somebody has been pruning it regularly over the years to give it the dome shaped crown. That could be throwing us off identification as cherries normally have a more open habit.

There are no other cherry trees near by. I live on an estate which is now ten years old. I planted the tree about 7 or 8 years ago when it was in a little pot. The card that was attached to it said to cut it into a dome shape; indeed I remember the picture on the card, showing a rounded shape...it was gorgeous. I am the one that cuts it...about three times each year during the growing season, although it is now getting to the stage where a ladder is going to be needed to reach the top! I have a photo somewhere of the tree when I first put it in...will try to take a photo of the photo!

Ahh, that explains the dome shape. :) It's a shame we can't read the label that's attached to it in the picture and I don't suppose you can remember where you bought it, that may help. You could take the above picture back there for identification.

I always keep the labels....well, I say always! I did take this photo, along with part of the tree, back to the garden centre. It had them baffled too! They did say that quite frequently they get grafted trees in from abroad and they sell really fast, even before they have had the chance to get a proper look at them. They weren't very confident in telling me what it was. I am going to now investigate an expert (like yourself) who can maybe come take a look. I won't rest until I find out now.

I'm no expert on trees Markymark, :doh:but have a fair general knowledge of many plants and gardening, that's with the exception of vegetable growing and exotics, neither of which I'm interested in. :)

I wonder if it's worth making contact with the RHS or somewhere like Kew Gardens to see if they can help.

To be quite honest it looks like a not very ornamental flowering cherry to me.
