We've just recently got back from Madeira and saw these. I presume they are some form of duck

We also went to the gardens at Monte and there were some swans on their lake. This particular swan came to my attention because its wings didn't move the whole time I was watching him swim around. They were in the arched shape whether he was smming or trying to get some food on the grass by the lake. He didn't attempt to get out of the water (I would presume he would flap his wings to do so) but just tried to stretch his neck to reach it.
Do they sometimes get paralysed wings? Apart from that, he seemed very healthy.

Not sure Shiney but they look as though they may be Muscovy ducks. They come in that sort of colouring quite varied.

Lovely pics Shiney. :dbgrtmb: There's nothing wrong with the swans wings, there's usually a couple of reasons for this, the first being a warning to anyone he doesn't like the look of. The second usually for courting. :)

Take your pick, he/she obviously had designs on you one way or the other. :heehee:

Not me! :nonofinger: He was swimming around like that when I was nowhere near him. You can just see him, still like that, in this photo.

They are Muscovys,(sound Russian but come from Central America:smile: )
You managed to get there then! I presume you are fully recovered now.
The swans are over by the huge vase, the wall tiles around the gardens there are amazing.

We had a pair of Muscovy ducks, Bubble and Squeak, and they used to fly out to Hanningfield Resevoir but always returned for their dinner. That's why I thought your photo was Muscovys shiney.

Moyra and strongy, thanks for the I.D. :dbgrtmb:

Sheal, it bothered me that the wings didn't even move when it was trying to get out of the water!

            Strongy,
we were very lucky with the weather :blue thumb: For the ten days before we got there they had very bad weather but it was warm and sunny for us. We did the usually touring around, sightseeing, levada walks (Dos Tornos - very easy), strolling around town - and eating. The place is suffering a bit with the recession and a lot of shops have closed. We found a new Indian restaurant near the Cathedral - excellent food but a bit out of the way and he hasn't the faintest idea about publicising himself .

Did he have a female 'in tow' Shiney. It's coming up for breeding season so it's probably display or defence. Swans partner for life and he was probably courting. :)

I didn't see him get anywhere near another swan. :dunno:

If they're not wearing bras then I can't tell if they're females.
