I used to think that, until I read somewhere that most birds don't have a very good sense of smell, and are not able to detect human odour. We accidentally disturbed a nest (can't remember which type of bird it was) pruning our pasiflora the first year we got our house and a chick (eyes closed and with no feathers) fell out. We scooped it up and put it back in the nest, where it went on to fledge along with its brothers and sisters.
I think it's just the general threat and disturbance which birds don't like.

I made a lovely discovery today. I'd made a mug of tea and was sitting in the Arbour, with the cats, just looking at what was going on in the garden. Some of you know I built my Arbour out of wood lying in the garage and from other projects and also that I had no real idea what it was going to look like when I'd finished it.:heehee: As I was building the roof I decided to put a Bird Box into it with the entrance on the front face.

Nearly finished with the hole in the front panel.

Anyway, as I was sitting with the mug of tea and the cats, a bird kept flying towards the Arbour and then flying off. So hoping against hope I moved to the other side of the garden and watched. It was a pair of Tits that had decide to take residence in the Arbour Nest Box. I can't tell you how pleased I was to see that an random idea had worked out and the Tits had approved!!:hapfeet: So now, for the time being, I've lost my seat in the Arbour as I don't want to take the risk of putting the birds off. I can sit by the pond and drink my tea or on the Stone Seat where I can see the Arbour. I'll try to get some pics of them coming and going out of the Arbour and post them:snork:

What a lovey idea - so pleased that it worked and that you now have new tenants!

Fantastic - I love to see fledglings with their crinkled beaks we had a nestbox that was finally used after about 3 years - the first nest failed and they all died - we emptied and cleaned it and the second brood sucessfully fledged (at 6 am and I missed it :snooze: ). When cleaning the box we noticed the back had cracked so we replaced it - its never been used or even inspected since. Looking forward to the photos

I'm busy tomorrow with lots of jobs on, but I'm sure I'll find the time to set the camera up with the 500mm lens on a tripod and remote control and sit on the Stone Bench for while to see what happens:snork:

The Siskins are busy but still no young yet, maybe a bit early.

Great to see the Greenfinches back and with a young'un and unlike the Sparrows and Starlings they leave it to feed itself.

The yet to be planted veg patch is a seed centre at the moment as they are flicking most of the seeds out of the feeder tray onto the ground, little sods.:wallbanging:

                  Lovely pictures.

I need to try and look closer at our birds as I think I've been mistaking siskins for greenfinches. Do siskins congregate in vast numbers on the trees? We have, what I thought were greenfinches, hanging on the willow branches when queuing up for the bird feeder.

Shiney, Siskins are slightly smaller and are yellow and green and have noticeable black wing bars and the males have a black 'cap' (as in top two pics) the female is less colourful with a streaky front. Greenfinches are mainly green with a yellow wing bar.
Siskins do congregate in trees specifically Pine, Birch and Alder and are more likley to hang on branches than Green Finches .
A pic would help, the Siskins here are the tamest of all our visiting garden birds.

Coming back from a walk near Dorchester we had to stop the car yesterday to watch 14 Buzzards circling overhead, they drifted away and then came back, never seen that many together before only 6 or 7. No pics (no camera).:frown:

I had a Sparrow suffer Pilot Error yesterday afternoon when it flew into the Kitchen window and stunned itself while I was filling a Watering Can from the outside tap. I retrieved it from a large Skimmia where it had fallen....I could swear as I picked it up it was muttering "Bummer!!!" . I took the Sparrow to the front of the House, gave it time to recover and then let it fly off seemingly unharmed except for a headache.:heehee:

I read the best thing to do in this situation is keep them upright in a bowl with lots of towels to keep them warm. FYI just in case it happens to any of you. If they aren't upright they can't breathe properly and die.

Mrs Shiney sorts them out with no trouble. She gives them some Rescue Remedy and some healing and they recover very quickly. When they've recovered they tend to stay around her for about ten minutes before flying off.

Here are just a couple of photos of different occasions
