Armandii, it was a lousy day, cloudy cool and windy so very little flying around. We were looking for the rarer Lulworth Skipper but only saw the above one which I have now been informed is the Large Skipper. I'll have to go back when the sun is out.

 

Some lovely photographs there. i'll have to start taking my camera out with me.

One thing i have noticed this year, is the high number of bees and the different types. I haven't seen so many, for years, but then I have created a very bee friendly garden, which has come into it's own this year and flowered galore! Lupins, foxgloves, jacobs ladder, geraniums, lots of beans and potatoes, apples, wildstrawberries, cherries, honeysuckle and I allowed some wild flowers to grow too.
I am quite pleased with myself especially as i feel like the bees are enjoying my garden too. And, i'm not quite sure, but there seems so many in the hedge, i am wondering if they could be swarming in there, not sure, but it's great to go into the garden and hear the bees! There has been such dreadful news about the problems with hives and not enough food etc. I'm hoping this is a turn around year!

Disappointingly, just one Sand Lizard, female.

strongylodon, we have heard and seen buzzards "mewing" in the sky above us in Corfe and ...guess what? Whilst quietly tidying up in the front garden this morning, we heard that same cry - looked up - and high above were 4 of them circling and "mewing" to one another. Is Buzzard the correct name for them please? We see red Kites by the dozen when we go visiting an Aunt in Reading but I think they are silent. Is that correct?

Probably Buzzards Jenny, I'm not sure they have spread in numbers to Kent yet, they are only just appearing in Dorset. They do make a mewing sound but slightly different to Buzzards.

i'd be very interested to find out what this weird lookin' thingamajig is too, i've occasionally come across these whilst digging in the garden myself & wondered what they are...or what they may become? most importantly though..are they friend or foe
