The avocets should have arrived by then. We went in November last year.

If possible, time your visit for around the time of high tide. While we were there the tide started to go out and it was remarkable how quickly the roosting birds started to disperse. Although it's interesting to watch them as they start to feed on the mudflats, they soon spread out and move further away into the estuary.

oh what are they M? for a moment i thought they were Cabbage Whites Caterpillars but the heads are different ain't they ?

 

No idea, HB, I'm calling them "Greedy" because by the time I'd taken photos from around the garden, that leaf had been decimated!

 

They are sawfly larvae, possibly gooseberry sawfly.
