These little chaps are so brave. Sorry about the lousy photo but I don't want to disturb them. I wonder how they will get on with the next 24 hours or so,

They look like they're hanging on for dear life! They'll be ok...nothing stops them munching. :)

They'll be fine Jenny, as Fern says, they'll just go to ground until the worst is past. :)

This big bumblebee is either very hungry or a bit lethargic, it's going very slowly and thoroughly through each stamen.

This white blob (about 1" long) is an insect cocoon covered itself with white tack (like Blutack only white:th scifD36:).
              image.jpg

What had happened, you may ask? Well, earlier in the year I built an anti-butterfly cage for my sprouts. I stuck some white tack inside some little plastic pots then positioned them up-side-down over the top of bamboo canes (sticking the canes onto the tack for more stability), then put netting over the pots to keep the netting on top of the canes. Last weekend I dismantled the cage. When I took one of the pot off the cane, I saw this white blob on the cane. Surprised by it and not sure what it was, I took it off and had a close look at it which is when I discovered it was a cocoon. The larva appeared to have chewed up the white tack and then used it to build a cocoon around itself.
I was extremely impressed by the ingenuity and resourcefulness of even the simplest of the creatures around us. I've stuck it on a twig and put it in a bottle to wait for it to hatch. I want to see who this clever creature is.

A pair of Dippers under the stone bridge at Lynmouth, didn't expect to see them so near the sea.

I came across them while watching a Grey Wagtail on the opposite bank. They have probably come down the river up near Watersmeet.
