@silu, a majority of the House Martins would be young ones as there would have probably been two broods. The second half of September is usually the time they leave us but take a few weeks to get down to the South coast as they will not be in any hurry.

Two unringed Ospreys at Arne this morning, it will be interesting how they will interact with the 14 young relocated ones when they are released next month if they are still here.

Thank you @strongylodon, just seemed so early for them to be massing.Always sad to see our summer visitors go. Our many:rolleyespink: nesting Swallows won't leave here until say the middle of September usually. Great photos by the way.

I kept getting a butterfly landing on me yesterday (whilst I was doing the watering) until I realised that it was probably a moth. Am I right in thinking that when they close their wings butterflies have them standing perpendicular to their bodies?

The 'moth' was the size of a red admiral (not smaller) and, in flight, was a bright orange over most of its body with black and yellow stripes at the wing tips where the red admiral has its black and white patches. when sitting on me it had its wings absolutely flat to my body and there was no orange showing at all. Instead, it had very well defined black and white diagonal stripes. Very attractive.

The nearest I can find on the web is a Tiger moth but the wings, in the pictures, are angled backwards and seem smaller. Whereas mine had wide wings like the red admiral. Mine also had diagonal stripes and not the diagonal and crosshatch style of the Tiger.

          Any ideas?

That's what I thought it was but the stripes seemed different from any of the pictures I'd seen. :noidea: Shape and colouring appear the same but stripes were different - but I suppose the could have variations. It was very attractive and a very bright orange.

looks like I have at least 2 couples of hummingbirds. they love my feeder and the yellow wax bells and the fall aneminies . and of course the honeysuckle vine on my deck.

@redstar I hope to see some when we go to Colorado/Arizona next week.

Great White Egrets in Weymouth, gradually increasing in numbers in the UK, where these three unringed ones have coming from I have no idea, they are the same size as the common grey Heron.

Hummers start appearing early here, like about early May. I know they are around as they love my Virginia Blue Bells, darting in and out of them. And have very few "red" flowers. So, right after I see them in May, I get out the sugar feeder, with no red food coloring in it (bad for them). they also love the honeysuckle vine on the deck which will start its earliest bloom mid-May, blooming several time through the season. and there are other flowers they love I have also. the latest is the yellow wax bells.

the blue heron is over, one street, in a huge pasture, some of which has a stream running through it. sometime I see him, or one of his family, in our creek at the edge of our property.
