First Wheatears have arrived on the South coast already and will continue until the middle of October. This is a young one, I bet it doesn't know it has a 4,000 mile journey ahead to the central African plains!!

A bird I hadn't seen before went flying overhead yesterday. It was thin with a long body, long slim head with long beak and its legs were dangling down whilst in flight. It appeared dark but as it was flying with the sun behind it I have no idea what colour it was.

I realise that trying to judge size of something flying overhead is very dependent on distance so I may be totally wrong, but the legs seemed to be about 12" - 15" long, body similar, longish neck and head and the beak about 4" - 5". This may just be a guide to length of beak compared to legs. The wings seemed to be slim and more pointed at the end (as opposed to a buzzard's wings being wide at the end). The neck was nowhere near as long as a heron and not even as long as a little egret.

All this was spotted for only about 7 seconds before it went behind the tree line.

        Any ideas.

I spent a few minutes watching this European Hornet this morning.. It appeared to be hanging by a leg munching something but I couldn’t see what but think it was sap but not sure.. It was very big.! Had to be easily 1/2 - 3/4” long.! This is their main time now though I do know that.

Are they the ones that are a threat to our bees?

Lovely pic @wiseowl... They are one of my favourite birds despite their reputation.....
                        One for sorrow,
                        Two for joy,
                        Three for a girl,
                        Four for a boy,
                        Five for silver,
                        Six for gold,
                        Seven for a secret,
                        Never to be told.
                        Eight for a wish,
                        Nine for a kiss,
                        Ten for a bird,
                        You must not miss. :spinning:

Saw a gorgeous dragonfly this morning sunning itself on the wall of the house. Only the 2nd 1 I have ever seen here. I took a photo of it but you can't really see it against the background of the house unfortunately. I know zero about them but will have to try and find out a little of their ways as was truly a lovely thing to see.
