In a retail park today I returned to my car to find a pest control van had parked beside my car. While I settled myself a chap opened the side door of the van then opened what looked like a large safe and took out a beautiful Harris hawk, one of two he had with him. I chatted with him and he explained he was there to drive away the large amount of seagulls that had been nesting on top of 'The Range', a shop that covers a big area and at one end of the park. He released the hawk and gradually made his way along the car park calling the bird which was slowly driving the gulls away from the area. Both he and the bird were out of sight by the time I left and the hawk seemed to be doing it's job well. :)

The wasps are out and there's been flying ants. I was out walking barley and the flying ants kept landing on me and barley.

Just been for the last dip of the day and a lovely experience with the bats doing Canadair impressions over the water :)
Earlier, I noticed the egrets congregated round the agri-lac. We normally only see them in the fields with cattle, but the general drought is now starting to make itself felt by the wildlife!

I have cropped this pic even after zooming in on it as the bird was about 300ft high in the sky.
White Tailed Sea Eagle over Poole Harbour. One of the isle of Wight translocated ones which is now 4 years old and showing it's white tail and had just come back from 2 months in the Pennines.

It has taken until August to see my first Spotted Flycatcher and they are not spotted but striped.

I'm noticing lots more bees around now, both bumble and honey.
Lady birds are still in short supply though.
Lots of small yellow brown butterflies.
The worst things are blue bottles, I must be rotten as they keep settling on me all the time.

I can't think we have yet had the mass flying ant episode this year, seen some but not many.

@strongylodon ,nice picture of the eagle, but what was it doing for two months in the pennines.
Was it breeding? Do they go there to breed.
Seems strange, I thought that they were a coastal bird.

@pete, they are but juveniles travels long distances for up to four years when they are finally sexually mature and will then look for for a mate often near where they were released which is coastal. There are two two year olds favouring Poole Harbour at present.

Ok thanks, just didn't realise how long it takes for them to mature.
It's not a short process but any means trying to get them established then.

4 foot? that is Eagle sized, where was it exactly, is it near large wooded areas? What is it perched on to gives some scale?
