We have three water bowls on the patio (actually they are seed trays) and yesterday there were three wood pigeons drinking at the same time. Two of them had the big wide splash of feathers on the sides of their necks and the third, who was bigger and fluffier, had the white flash on the sides and all the way round the back of his neck in one long flash. Are they different breeds or is it common to have those type of differences?

@shiney, it sounds like a slight variation.

Tree Sparrows, sadly all but disappeared in many southern counties.

Sitting with my coffee, had this lovely bird hopping about, got out my bird book to find its name, and the you tube for the song. enjoy.

A pair of blackbirds around here and watching them they seem to be raising their chicks on petals from the Feijoa trees, they are even ignoring meal worms and grabbing beak fulls of petals.

@pete, presumably not feeding them petals just flying off with them. Maybe decorating the nest!

I,m not sure, I think they eat them as the sparrows go for them as well.
The blackbirds are around with a beak full of petals and still pecking around at other stuff and they come back time after time, I think its the sugar in the petals that they like.

I have never heard of birds feeding petals to young before but as you say, they may have a sugar content that they like.
