Ruff, a Summer visiting wader stopping off for a feed on migration back to Africa although a very small number manage to over winter here.

 

I know it is difficult to discern, but these are Flamingos which come to the estuary of The Arade River at Portimao low tide ...

Very tame, it was feeding a few feet in front of me.

Wheatear, passing through on migration.

 

I've seen a few of these this summer, I didn't know it was the box moth either.

 

Yes and they had the moth caterpillars earlier.

I took a pic of a tiny dark bird silhouetted up in the trees, could be a Blue Tit or Goldcrest!!!


Lightened it a bit at home and found it was a Firecrest, wouldn't have known otherwise.

 

You can buy bacillus thuringiensis to spray onto your box trees /hedges to kill the caterpillars. Also works for cabbage whites, although make sure you get the the right sort of Bt, there's different types.
