Regarding butterflies I see more small ones than the larger ones you used to see.
I'm not good at knowing what they are but small blue ones and brown ones are abundant, the bigger old favourites seem to be dying out around here.
Its OK letting the grass grow long but unless amongst it there are the correct food plants for the caterpillars it wont have any affect on butterflies.
Might be good for some pollinators though.

All parts of wildlife here has had a big drop in numbers this year, buzzards gone, we had 2 red kites gone, hedgehogs gone, wood pigeons 3/4 numbers down, doves 3/4 down in numbers, robins same number as last year, blackbird number are way down, butterflys are well down in number as well, it's not nice to see, but if it's the same in the next few years we won't have any wildlife here

Our garden has had a very good turn out of birds, butterflies and bees this year - as usual. All through Autumn the birds were clearing out the small feeders in 1.5 days.

I've removed the big feeder that is 3ft high and 4" diameter because the pigeons were mobbing it and attacking the smaller birds, but they can't perch on the smaller feeders so only some of them stayed to clear up what the messy eaters dropped on the ground. The smaller birds were getting through that amount of seed regularly but in the last couple of weeks they haven't even emptied them once.

          Any ideas why?

Birds dont seem to be eating much from my feeder recently either.
I'm guessing its a combination of mild weather and lots of wild food still around from the Autumn.

Not a problem here. They're emptying my normal sized feeders within a couple of hours. The Chaffinches seem to have recovered from the last few years of disease and have bred well this year. I have about three dozen visiting together every day.
