We went for a walk along the river footpath yesterday and saw what we thought were loads of seagulls on the water and flying up onto roofs. Their shape and movements were very like seagulls but I don't think they were.

They were slightly smaller, with white not orange beaks, very white bodies with a black collar and thin black stripes running back from their eyes.

      Any ideas?

Not quite as noisy as they made little noise when swimming but made a similar noise to a seagull when flying onto roofs. They weren't very noisy as the flying bit was short - from water to roof. There was none of the usual flying around in circles squawking.

There isn't a British Gull with white beaks, I was trying to find a likely suspect.

@shiney yes I have spent hours looking for a river/white sea bird with a white beak its a wind up:heehee::heehee::heehee:

            or
Do seagulls change Colour in winter?

Adults are told from most gulls by their large size, pale grey upperparts and pink legs. In summer they have a white head, which develops dark streaking in winter.

We have eight resident Gulls in the UK, Five have white heads all year round when adult, Great Black Back, Lesser Black Back, Herring Gul, Kittiwake and Common Gull and are bigger than the other three, Black Headed, Mediterranean and Little Gull these have black heads in Summer and white with a dark smudge behind the eye in Winter. None of this helps in identifying shiney's mystery birds.:rolleyespink:
