What's buzzing or flying near you 2024 ?

I've never known so much flying insect activity at this time of the year before, the place was literally buzzing with flies and bees, and not just those big old bumble bees that always appear early.

 

I had another look at the local Waxwings while they are still here.


Eating so many Mistletoe berries means when you 've got to go.....

I captured this Canada goose just before landing at Peebles Island state park Cohoes, NY. January the 8th. and not a square inch of ice to be seen. I don't recall any winter in my lifetime that has been this unusual. Not complaining, just saying.

 

Black-Capped Chickadee enjoying the sun and unusual 53 degrees temperature.

 

It looks similar to our Coal Tit Hydrogardener.

 

Just seen 8 ladybirds,3 bubble's, 2 Honey Bee's and a Red Adrimal butterfly

 

And a partridge in a pear tree.

 

Goldfinches and Siskins, we had 35 Goldfinches in the dead Acacia yesterday! never had that number before.
Caused problems when the max number that can get on the on the feeders is just 8.

 

@shiney, I have heard that some people in Reading are asking for a cull of Red Kites due to them being fed and classing them as a nuisance. I hope that won't happen where you are but the numbers maybe less.

 

It's lovely when birds get to know and trust us @shiney and it's a shame when they disappear, for whatever reason. I've hand fed a couple of pheasants in the past. A robin that visited for a couple of years, I haven't seen since last autumn. He/she came to the bird station feeding tray when I called.

The birds know exactly when it's feeding time too. The blackbirds are always waiting for me to put food out in the morning, looking forward to the handful of raisins they get as a treat.
