I don't think they will be a problem round here, at least not for quite a while. The farmers are quite happy with them taking small rodents and there has never been a report in this area of anything bigger being attacked. I don't think anyone else along here throws out scraps/bones etc. for them.

A very large Prunus came into flower yesterday and it is now full of wood pigeons eating them :rolleyespink:

We have a wall that extends at right angles to our office window and is covered in ivy. The Robins are already deciding whereabouts in it they will make their nests - four distinctly different Robins are looking. We had three Robin nests in it last year and a blackbird's nest. Haven't seen the blackbirds yet.

Also there is a Leylandii hedge opposite where Wrens tend to nest but have only seen one Wren looking so far.

It's now taking me twice as long to type anything as I keep getting distracted by the birds. :)

Whooper Swans, along with Bewick Swans come here from Russia for the Winter. Very rarely do they come to the South West of Britain, this pair are on the Somerset Levels.
The yellow bill distinguishes them from the Mute Swan (in the background). Whooper Swan - Greylake (14).JPG

I heard, but didn't see, a green woodpecker in the little park down the road this morning. That has a wooded belt adjoining railway lines, and it was evidently checking out the trees, doing some 'territorial calling' (like rather wild laughter!) interspersed with a bit of drumming on the trunks. Will hope to see it properly another day - maybe it might even nest? That would be exciting, I've not seen one down there before!

The bald eagles are refurbishing their nest for spring, love is in the air. The nest brings to mind that old song: Be it ever so humble, there is no place like home.

It's fascinating watching the Robins and Wrens building their nests just outside my office window.

I have stacked dead leaves and moss, supplemented by Mrs Shiney's hair when I cut it, under a small Euonymous opposite the wall of ivy that they are using. They are certainly making good use of it.

Although they move too fast for me to be sure the Wrens seem to also have taking some small feathers in there as well. There are always some small feathers under the bird feeders.

Surprisingly, no Blackbirds have even appeared to take a look at the ivy this year. I can't remember a year in the last twenty that there haven't been Blackbirds there.
