What's buzzing or flying near you 2024 ?

It's definitely been a good year for Goldfinches and Greenfinches here, they get through so much food!

 

@CatDouch haven't seen a greenfinch in donkey years.
Saw my first comma butterfly this morning on the agapanthus flowers. Beautiful colour.

 

Just saw this ,female sparrowhawk I think , sitting in the tree above the feeder in the garden . Let me get to six feet away to take this pic with my mobile.
Probably waiting to ambush a tit for her tea so felt a bit guilty when she flew off.

 

I've not seen greenfinches since the 70s.
Sometimes goldfinches almost outnumber the sparrows around here.

 

No pics but I’m watching a few bats flit about at dusk and hoping to hear owls again tonight.

 

Never used to see goldfinches in the garden here but since I put up a nijar seed feeder I get quite a few everyday now . They seem to be very greedy birds ,they just sit there for ages pecking away and can empty a feeder in a day.

 

I have had demoiselles in the garden this year, often sitting on my tomato plants.

 

Found this male scorpionfly on my tomato plants today. Couldn't get a very good photo of it, but was enough to identify. The plants are covered in spider webs and I thought it might get caught, but on googling the species it seems they steal the spider's catch.

 

Getting 3-4 of these at a time at the moment....

I have lots of Hoverflies around the flowering plants and some bees, but nothing unusual otherwise. Everything seems calming down.

 

Yes lots of hoverflies here too. Anything orange or yellow does not stay long without a hoverfly on it.
I use to have a bird feeder with a bright yellow base, and hoverflies would regularly approach and check it out before retreating disappointed.

 

Loads of hoverflies and bees here. I use a lot of orange plants too @Escarpment . We've had a quite afew peacocks in recenty too, but the red admirals have been thin on the ground - and in the air. August, by and large, is when we get the latter here. Hardly seen any little torties either this year which is a shame. They're probably our most common butterfly round here.

However, these two bees were having a nice little rest on this new dahlia flower yesterday when I came home. They were still there half an hour later when I took the pic - although not a very good one!
I was trying to make the dinner at the same time so I was in too much of a hurry.

That would indeed be good @Bluejayway but I'm pretty sure your bird is a Grey Wagtail. I've often watched them there whilst having a coffee at the cafe near the bridge.
