What's buzzing or flying near you 2024 ?

Another 10kg of sunflower seeds arrived yesterday so the garden birds are "Happy Easter chicks". Bank manager might not be so happy, that's the second lot this year! This morning was busy with quite a few different visitors; x3 Siskin, x2 Goldfinch, x2 Greenfinch and a pair of Greater spotted woodpeckers. Those are the ones we've only recently started to get, but are becoming almost as regular as the tits (blue, coal, great and longtail), nuthatch, robin and blackbird. There are still the other "occasional" visitors, but sadly not the bullfinch since June last year

 

A couple of Nuthatches are very busy and noisily making an old bird box into their des res. Last years resident great tits have been booted out but are now showing interest in the other box in the garden now that my OH has made the entrance hole a bit bigger. I was hoping that we'd have blue tits in the smaller box but it didn't happen last year so the great tits might as well use it.

Just found this thread - great to hear what wildlife is flitting about.

I saw a heron in my garden today! We have a pond and ‘the’ heron used to call from time to time but I don’t think his fishing was ever successful. Our fish have gone now so perhaps the heron was just checking if the larder is still bare.

Down in size from that visitor, a little robin came to inspect my post ivy-pulling efforts. Good shout as I expect I disturbed some worms doing that.

The old Heron will take a frog or two, or perhaps your Robin....

 

Within a day or two of enlarging my pond a few years ago, a heron appeared on the garage roof next door.

Nothing for him to eat though. We have loads of herons around as there's lots of water sources, but they rarely come into gardens.
There's a pair of magpies just now, who are determined to get bits of blackthorn out of this area for a nest. This was the 2nd time I'd seen them trying to pull bits away.
They don't seem to have worked out that it'll be a bit jaggy for sitting on ...

 

I gave my front grass its first cut of the year on Friday, but was careful to preserve the dandelions. This morning the garden was full of hoverflies.

 

Heard 2 chiffchaffs last week and then today saw and heard one in the hazel thicket of our garden.
A small tortoiseshell and peacock butterfly on the wing. Many bees and as always can't ID them.
Jackdaws queuing up to go into the old owl box (never used by owls!). Pigeons galore sweeping down on the plum and gages flowers.

 

We too had ChiffChaffs to listen to and see on our walk, they seem very territorial !

 

I heard chiffchaffs too and also spotted Peacock and Comma butterflies and a bee fly.

 

I’ve seen a comma butterfly as well. It seemed a bit bewildered by the bright light. But so was I…

 

50+ Waxwings yesterday in an office car-park tree in Sheffield, dropping down periodically to grab berries off a nearby Cotoneaster bush.

 

I'm so envious, I've never seen a waxwing. They don't tend to come so far south west.
