What's buzzing or flying near you 2024 ?

Not the best of pictures, but this was on the outside of the widow and it was raining out there! May fly in March...

 

Watching the way the birds feed it is not surprising it spreads. Finches (including Siskin) are always scavenging what the others drop, worrying for me is that the Robin seems to also do the same. I'm not sure removing the feeders is the answer (don't know what is) as they will simply spread it elsewhere. It would be nice to think we humans could come up with some solution like meds in their food. Then again a lot we do does seem to often backfire .

 

That's really sad, poor birds.

 

I agree @DiggersJo I’m not sure removing the feeders is the answer as the birds will just gather at the next good feeding area. It’s quite worrying though as Trichomonosis is more normally seen in the autumn not the spring. It’s heartbreaking at the moment though, as the female Bullfinch is sat under the bird feeder, which is empty, and she’s shaking and it’s pouring with rain

I've not seen one yet this year, last year we had lots of them. Two of them were either mating or fighting (or both), but I did find 2-3 a few days after lying dead on the path. We've had lots of honey bees on the flowering skimmia in the last few weeks, I've never noticed so many this early before?

 

The long tailed tits were looking very sad and soggy this morning. Also had a gorgeous female blackcap and a magpie dunking calciworms in the birdbath.

'My' magpies are still determined to use bits of blackthorn for their nests.
Sigh...
The bits are there temporarily to protect the new hedging I've put in, and they just keep pulling them out to check them.


All the blackthorn is coming out, which is a bit of a tricky job. More sawing will be required!

 

Just seen a goldcrest behaving oddly in the Scots pine outside our bedroom window. I’m guessing this is a mating display? Its orange crest was fluffed up, and it was fluttering its wings and tail. They are regular visitors to the pines in our front garden, but I’ve never seen them do this before. I couldn’t work out what the bright orange thing was, turned out to be the top of its head. Shame I don’t have a decent camera.
I’ve just read back through this thread, didn’t have time to tick all the ‘likes’ but please accept my compliments on some wonderful pictures. Interesting to hear about all the different visitors to your gardens.

 

Wait until a group of ducks will swim in your pond

The stormy weather on Thursday has taken off a lots of cherry flowers, unfortunately, and bees have now less choice. My bay leave tree is no replacement but I was glad that someone liked it.

 

Re the ducks @simone_in_wiltshire, we have a couple in the burn up the road that I see quite often, but I've also seen ducks on corrugated garage roofs here when it's been wet

 

We love having the door to the garden wide open in the sunshine …but we do get uninvited guests in our living-room … we’ve had a Robin on the rocking chair (Rockin Robin anyone ) woodpigeons walking about by the fireplace , a frog in front of the tv, and countless dragon and damsel flies and other insects … yesterday we were visited by the first Queen Wasp of the season … she started investigating a bookcase for a suitable nesting site! … I ushered her gently back into the garden
