Skylarks - 15 minutes walk from our house we came upon a field that was filled with the sound of skylarks, some singing while climbing up and up... some foraging for food and this fellow standing on a post singing its head off.

Thanks, Spruce and HsuH, for the i.d., and thanks to everyone for the interest. As far as I know that's the first time I have ever seen that particular insect...........which makes me wonder how many more different species are out there that I haven't seen!!:snork:

There are a few plants they were concentrated on. The worst effected was Phuopsis stylosa. I pain-stakingly picked them out by turning the soil shovel by shovel... hopefully I got most of them.

I'm thinking of starting a tread in the 'Pest & Disease' section by listing the plants I find that vine weevils are partial to, and hopefully everyone on the forum could join in to add to the list so that we can keep checking on those plants.

I thought my Heucheras were looking a little sad in March so I checked for slugs but as I lightly tugged one of them it came up in my hand, I then found vine weevils everywhere and five Heucheras were affected but they were cleaned, divided and potted up and therefore saved. The birds (as yours did HsuH) loved the grubs.
Fuchsias are well known for vine weevil attacks.

Very little to see out and about this morning, a pair of Marsh harriers, possibly a breeding pair, 20 Lapwings and hundreds of newly arrived Swifts. Everything else was sheltering from the gale force winds.:frown:

It's lovely to see the youngsters Strongy. I think it will be another couple of weeks before we see them being fed here.
