The boys are getting kicked out from the nests now, they're just trying to find a place to survive the winter.

I've had about 20 in total! I don't know how they're getting in! I think what concerns me the most is that this never happened last year, I've been trying to find a wasp-sized gap somewhere either in the living room or the mezzanine that overlooks it... I'm getting quite obsessive lol

Have you checked out your loft space Ellen? They may be coming from there.

It's a barn conversion Sheal, the room just goes right up to the roof. Good thought though :) My mum had a wasp nest in her loft years ago, it's still there (the wasps were got rid of long ago), it's a work of art!!
It's a puzzler, I can only think they're maybe squeezing in through the keyhole of the door that leads from the mezzanine out to the steps down the side of the building, even though it's got a key in, either that or there's a gap in a window frame...

I've now taken photos of the bat box that Mrs Shiney saw a bird going into. I've not spotted any bird that there's evidence of something being in there because of the dropping on the lower part of the box.

I might get one of those smoking draft detector things then & see where a likely gap is. The conversion is 35 years old & we know a couple of the window frames need replacing.

Eek! I don't *think* that's how they're getting in... I wouldn't put it past em though!

Ellen just another couple of thoughts. Have you any air bricks around the place or vents in soffits. Barn conversions are quite often open plan inside but if you have doors try to keep them shut, that might narrow down which area they are coming into first.

Shiney..... as members have suggested obviously something small getting in there, Goldcrest, Wren or tits but it could be Sparrows, they are surprisingly agile and they give me endless hassle under roof tiles, soffits and fascias!

There aren't any air bricks but I can't speak for completely sealed frames. They're definitely coming in in the living room, I've not found them in any other room in the house, aside from the mezzanine but from a wasp's perspective that's much the same as the living room with regards access
