@Spruce No, they were the size of a big bumblebee and appeared to be black right from the face to the bum. They seemed to be quite hairy all over as well. :noidea:

Hi Woo, It could be but the impression that I got was that they were quite hairy like a bumble bee.

@Spruce Thanks very much :blue thumb:. I was beginning to wonder whether I was seeing things. :heehee:

I had a quick look on the net and it seems that they've turned up earlier than usual. not sure whether usual is the right word as I can't remember having seen them before. I have seen bees disappearing into holes in the ground near my bonfire but assumed they were a bumble bee.

Mrs Shiney nursed a baby male blackbird today.

She found it, apparently in shock, on the front path. It didn't budge when she stroked its head so she picked it up (before the magpies got to it), brought it indoors and gave it some diluted rescue remedy. After a while she put it by the water bowl and it had a drink and a long bath and then flew off. :blue thumb:

Well ... She was flying across the drive, hotly pursued by a male, and then took refuge under my car, just as I was about to leave!
(Picked both up and popped them in the water barrel - just to prove that it's a good place for recoperating amphibians, a shot of one heading off across the grass a few minutes later) image.jpg
