What's Buzzing or Flying near you today... 2015

Just seen mummy and daddy robin (with worms) flying into their nest near my kitchen window! For a while now I have been noticing a robin in my garden and also that there was some activity in the thick ivy (gracing a brick wall), near to my kitchen window. I didn't want to investigate into the ivy, lest I find and disrupt a nest.

Today I saw 2 robins together, perched on my washing line, with food in their beaks. One darted into the area I suspected could be a nest (I had seen glimpses of fluttering of leaves). The 2nd robin, after pausing (why? saw me watching I guess) followed on into that same space. Which means....there must be baby robins there yes? How delightful!

I've got a feeling that the green guy was a Moth caterpillar, Spruce, and that he basically had the same appetite as me.....a Dustbin on legs.

I couldn't until I was around 18 when in the rif raf and a Corporal Engine Fitter towed me out into a bay in Cyprus called Sharks Cove. He let go and I sank about 20 feet to the sandy white bottom. I can still remember getting up to the top and doggy paddling until I got to the shore........and within a year and a half I had my licence for aqualung swimming

At least last weekend didn't frighten the parents away.

Sorry Shiney, late reply.
They start wing flapping at around 14 days and fledge at 18/20 days ready to leave the nest. Therefore the average time from hatching to leaving is just under 3 weeks.

Taken in the past week.

Managed to get another view of the house martins ...

But, my other real "achievement" came in the woods. On a morning walk I could hear quite a racket coming from above. Finally located the source of the noise ... a woodpecker nest!!

My patience was rewarded when I managed (in the blink of an eye!) to capture this shot ...

S/he was only there for the briefest second. Might even have been the "click" of the camera which spooked him away (?) again. I'm happy I caught it, despite the quality.

This is the Fella that is waiting for me in the early morning when I put seed in the Bird Feeders, food into the pond for the Fish, and then finally put Sultanas down on the old Bird Table by the Jasmine Hedge.

If he's not in sight then I just whistle and in he flies. No other bird, except his mate, is allowed to feed from the table until he's done. There is a rival Blackbird who tries to butt in and then an aerial battle starts until he gives in and retreats. Old Blackie is very distinctive in that he has a white forehead and a small flight feather sticking up out of his left wing............and, Boy, can he sing!!!!
