Corvids and tits abounded in the Ryburn Valley today, along with a woodpecker darting in and out of trees beside a millpond. This evening, poised on a rock in the middle of a fairly ferocious stretch of the River Calder, a heron who stood and surveyed the surroundings for a good half hour, looking ruefully onto the nature reserve which is being destroyed and turned into a building site.

My garden is positively buzzing with bees this year. :) Here are just a few of them I managed to catch with the camera today.

Also, wasn't buzzing or flying but I found this little gardener's friend in the sink pond.

An alternative abode for bees on a swarm yesterday. Not a clever plan though- too close to the communal path and facing due south.... :phew: We contacted a local bee keeper who arranged for the removal of the bird box, complete with the occupants within:

Went to Lower Wood Nature Reserve, heard lots of bird singing but didn't actually see many since the woods were quite dense. Along the little stream it was teaming with life.

Spent ages trying to photo Mayflies but I wasn't able to do a decent job. Very interesting to watch them come out of water and fly upwards but trying to locate them through the camera lens and keep track of them while bringing them to focus proved impossible for me.
