One of the small disused quarries at Portland, home to a Little Owl.

            Time for a stretch!

The main reason for going was to see another elusive bird, the Wryneck, also in the quarry, staying for a while before migrating. Sadly we have lost this member of the Woodpecker family as a breeding bird and only passes through the UK on passage Spring and Autumn.
Cryptic plumage patterns make it a difficult bird to see!
Distant shots but a first for me.

Still plenty of Wheatears around on the rocks.

Bar Tailed Godwit at Ferrybridge Weymouth, very few around compared to the hundreds of Black Tailed Godwits in Poole harour., I have never seen one this close.

I'm sitting here crying......silly old cow. A Gold Crest hit the kitchen window as I was doing the washing up. I rushed out to see if it was alive and before our 2 Birman cats came to investigate. It was, but understandably was very groggy and glassy eyed. I picked it up,God is it small, and gently carried it to a quiet safe place. I wanted to sit and stroke it but thought it best to just leave it to hopefully recover without the stress I might cause it.
Just in and IT'S FINE:hapfeet::hapfeet::yay::yay::yay:. I crept out to see it a few minutes ago and as I gently peered in to see it in the little "safe place" I had made for it, it flew off at speed, with fingers crossed not a bother on it. Promptly burst into tears when the we soul flew away, twit or what !? I always feel so guilty if birds hurt/kill themselves against our windows as feel if our house wasn't here....... That said my garden attracts 1000s of birds as we are between farmed land with few hedges and trees. Have tried various things to assist birds to see our windows with not a lot of success. We don't have too many casualties (Thrushes being the main one) but would prefer to have none.

I have transparent peelable leaves on our conservatory window openers which are ultra violet which birds can (or are supposed to) see to stop them flying into. Seems to have worked in thee years except one young Siskin which did recover quickly.

I have shown a number of shots of Mrs Shiney rescuing groggy or unconscious birds and, surprisingly, some actually fly back to her after they have recovered and gone off. The loveliest one was a kingfisher that she was called out to (caught by a cat). When it had recovered it flew back to the stream at the bottom of that garden and then came back and flew around Mrs Shiney's head a few times and then went off.

Our pheasants have been absent for quite some time - mainly throughout the drought period although we have plenty of water out for the birds.

The male who had spent the early part of the year with almost no tail has now grown it. He has come back with seven females. :dbgrtmb: I don't recognise any of the females and they look to be fairly young.

These sound a good idea. Where did you get them from @strongylodon? please. I have 2 enormous windows which are the main "culprits". I would be happy to try your remedy. I did have a few birds crash into my glass summerhouse door which was partially hidden by trees . I sorted that by draping a big bit of polythene over the door...not the most attractive look:) but it works. I can't really drape polythene over the house windows but would like to try something to stop further deaths. I did hang plastic clematis netting the whole way round my greenhouse 8x20ft! when it 1st was built and happy to report I had no deaths whatsoever. I have now removed the netting as birds are used to it being here and the glass isn't quite so clean as when 1st put up!

I think it was from Amazon @silu although some years ago (when postage was free!!).
There were coloured and black ones too.
