Haven't seen any sparrows or the blackbirds for awhile.. I put new suets blocks and coconut ball out and magpies have swarmed in.. they seem like bullies. The robin flies away when they come. Can I deter them and crows? Is chucking stale bread/cake out a good or bad thing too?

There are some perch only feeders available here

If food is still good enough for us to eat (even if it's stale) then its ok for the birds. If it's gone off enough to upset us, then it'll do the same to them.

                  Could be :)

Local nature reserve uses them, squirrels just sit underneath them eating what the birds drop and getting really fat

You probably know this but no peanuts when the nesting season starts :spinning:

                    Hi Linz,

The one thing to be aware of is the amount of salt/sugar in processed bread. It's generally said that they should only have proper bread not brand named bread such as Kingsmill, Warburtons etc ready sliced.

A beauty @hydrogardener :dbgrtmb: It looks very similar to our Marsh Tit with that long black cap and throat bib, although ours becoming quite rare now.:frown:

@Sheal I had a flock of 50+ Redwings fly overhead this morning at Arne and a few settled in a tree too far away to get a pic.

                          Linz,

You're alright with peanut things at this time of year. It's in the Spring when they're nesting and having babies you shouldn't use them.

I had hoped to see either a Marsh or Hen Harrier this morning and saw neither but a Kingfisher is always nice to see.

That seems quite a big flock @strongylodon, there was about a dozen or so stripping the berries here, it didn't take them long!

How long will the geese continue to fly south and what breed are they please? I can't make them out in flight.

I feed my garden birds on peanuts all year round even in the breeding season and never have any problems with the birds that visit my garden.I find usually that once the birds go off to moult in August/September then I have to stop putting the peanuts out. They go off of the fat balls around the same time, although at times I have had to put fat balls close to where my Blue Tits are nesting when the weather changes and the green caterpillars drop to the ground and I am sure I have saved the babies lives as the parents go backwards and forwards collecting the bits of fat balls and taking them straight up to the nest box:smile:

Mr Kandy counted up our House Sparrows not so long ago in the back garden and we had 53 of them due to my feeding them so well and it is good to see the whole flock fly up when they sense danger and when I am in the garden I can hear them all chattering in the hedgerows as they sort out their positions on the branches:snorky:

Round here the hedgerows are full of Redwings and Fieldfares feeding on the Hawthorn berries and I won't see them in my garden until we get snow and then they come for any apples I put out for them and my cotoneaster berries:biggrin:
