@hydrogardener the red contrasts so well in the snow, smart looking birds.:blue thumb:

Hooded Merganser on Radipole lake in Weymouth, it has been here for eight years now but was probably an escapee from a collection somewhere, still an attractive North American duck (in Winter).

                Shiney,
Is that nest fully enclosed? If so it could be a longtailed tit nest.....;)

I have been trying to get a photo of this slippery little devil for days, white- breasted nuthatch. They look like they are all dressed up for a formal dinner party, all dressed up and no place to go.;)

                  Great shot @hydrogardener a very attractive bird:dbgrtmb:

For a long time I thought this was a White Breasted Nuthatch, it moved so fast I couldn't get a clear pic, seeing yours I have now found out (after 8 years!!) that mine is a Pygmy Nuthatch. Jenny lake, Grand Tetons.

@strongylodon They do move around very quickly, so they are hard to photograph. There are also a few red-breasted nuthatches that show up from time to time. Getting a photo of one of them will be a real challenge also. I am going broke buying peanuts! :snorky:

I'm presuming that you're asking whether the top of the nest is almost covered but with a small hole in it. I'll have to try and have a look. As I'm ignorant about nesting habits, is the nest now abandoned? If it is I shall be able to remove it from the tree. Or do I leave it there for another bird to make use of? Do birds make use of abandoned nests?

                        Shiney,
A longtailed tit's nest is about the size of a grapefruit (English version not American!) and is made up of feathers, down, hair and other soft materials (lichen and mosses). The entrance is normally found near the middle of the nest but sometimes you can't see it at all.
I would have thought it's passed it's sell by date, and that it is too small to be used by anything, having said that why not leave it there for birds looking for nesting materials next spring or even the possibility of a returning longtailed tit.....

We normally leave all the nests in the garden (must have dozens of them :hate-shocked:). Even the wasp nests are left but, after the wasps have gone, some of the birds break them up!

I'll try and get a closer look at it as the tenants have left. I've just noticed, looked a bit closer at the photo, that they've even used a bit of nylon string. :)
