What's Cooking Today??

It could be, we had breaded chicken breast with chips and baked beans.

 

The cost of meats over there would interest me as to whether these commodities prices are close to ours. I've converted our $ to your sterling price /per pound weight of each, and at today's rate.

Chicken Whole 1.8
Beef Inside round roast 4.
Pork 2.14
Salmon 8.5

Are these prices anywhere near yours? I've been hankering for Salmon but the price is just too rich for me.

Salmon I buy is around £20 a kilo.
Cod and haddock varies between £16 to £18 a kilo.

Dont get a lot of meat but pork is pretty cheap.
And when you see how they raise pigs you can understand why.

 

So your prices aren't much different than mine and I find that strange because I am 1,500 miles from the ocean!

Price comparisons, as interesting as they are, is only half the story. The other half the story being, average salary/income.

To illustrate this point, when I had my first overseas holiday in Spain when I was a kid, we were blown away by how cheap everything was compared to back home. Yet the locals were not exactly rich. In fact a lot of them seemed quite poor compared to back home. So stuff was cheap, but income was low, so to the locals, things were not so cheap as a proportion of their income. It's changed a huge amount over the last few decades, but the point I'm making is simply, you can't compare cost of living without also comparing income levels.

So after this lengthy preamble, I wonder, what is the median income level in Canada?

 

@pete, that should have read 1,500 kilometers to the Atlantic Ocean or 1,200 miles. It's 2,700 miles going west to the Pacific.

@Clueless 1 v2 the median for skilled or professionals is apparently around the 50k mark and most families have both parents working. Course a whole chunk for that goes to child minding.

 

Prices can vary in the supermarkets over here, sometimes more than people realise.

Pork Shoulder Joint: Morrison's £4.50 per kg, Tesco £4.20 per kg, Aldi £3.30 per kg
Salmon Fillets (cheapest): Morrison's £18.75 per kg, Tesco £15.97 per kg, Aldi £10.49 per kg
Bacon: Morrison's £6.97 per kg, Tesco £6.50 per kg, Lidl £4.00 per kg

I have found that the four main supermarkets, Tesco, Asda, Morrison's and Sainsbury's are not as cheap as they could be. I don't like spending my hard-earned money in these establishments, but we have no markets anymore and independent groceries are few and far between where I live. I tend to go in Aldi, Lidl, B&M and Heron Foods, only go in Morrisons because they have a very good fish and cheese counter.

I reckon if I was to do all my food shop at only one of the big four supermarkets, it would probably cost me £15-£20 more per week. There are 7 different stores within 5 minutes walking distance where I park the car, so it's easy for me. On Saturday I purchased a few items from Heron foods, if I had Purchased the Lurpak and Filippo Berio extra olive oil in Morrison's, it would of cost me £2.69 more just on 2 items, it soon adds up.

@gks thanks for sharing all of that information. Our grocery store chains say the prices are because their costs have gone up but it has come out that they are all making record profits since the pandemic began.

Today I think I will have a hamburger garnished with pickled beets. I love sweet pickle relish when I made pickled beets the other week, I also grated some to make relish instead of slices. Although many of the slices are each big enough to cover a burger.

In Finland, everybody has an oversized ham for Christmas and the tradition is to get inventive with the (approximately 3kg of meat) leftovers. Funny, as nowadays everybody just freezes the leftovers but the competitive spirit is there- a bit like turkey salad/ sandwich/ curry/ "chicken" pie here in the UK

We have done the pizza and the omelette and the casserole and now the last bits of the ham went into the pea soup.
