We're going out tonight to a Bangladeshi :heehee: for a friend's birthday. So I have prepared a light lunch but wanted to something slightly fancy as it's a Sunday.

I have toasted thin slices of baguette, spread home made cream cheese on them, lightly blanched some asparagus so it is still crispy, wrapped it in smoked salmon and put it on the toast. I'll probably have three or four of those . A light squeeze of lemon on top and a small side salad with a light lemon and Dijon dressing.

A question. Your starter for 10.
I used to make a casserole stew type thing and towards the end of cooking I'd put a few flour and suet dumplings in.
But I've since bought a slow cooker and make it in that.
The question is, will dumplings cook ok in that and any idea how long they will take.

For the first time ever, we had a barbecue. Rump steak and corn on the cob using one of these disposable bbqs. Very tasty. I had to keep saying that its chargrilled not burnt...

I think you'll just have to try it and see. I put pasta in with a stew type thing and it had all just dissolved at the end of full time.

I just tried it and put it in half an hour before I wanted it, it seems to cook it OK.
I was thinking it would be under cooked or overcooked but I'd say 30 to 45 minutes.

@pete it depends on how quick you want to cook them in a slow cooker. I have an old one so only have the choice of low or high cooking - I always use high that takes about four to five hours and dumplings would cook in half and hour. I'm now on a gluten free diet, so using rice based flour instead they take three quarters of an hour. I also drop potatoes in two hours before it's ready to serve.

Ours was supposed to be lambs liver in a nice sauce of tomato and herbs, served with mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes.

Instead it turned out to be a doner kebab.

The liver, I realised literally at the last minute, as I was preparing to put it in the pan, with the potatoes and sweet potatoes already half cooked in the steamer, was actually a pack of kidneys. I mean, fancy putting the liver and kidneys right next to each other with the same coloured label. Doesn't the supermarket chain know that some of us don't carry out reading glasses to the shop?

Anyway, having never cooked kidneys before, I tried to cook them the same as I'd cook liver, but they turned out as tough as old boots, like, as in I could barely get a knife through the one I tested.

Mash now in the fridge for fryup tomorrow, kidneys in sauce going in the bin. Kebab shop to the rescue.
