Perhaps it a case of plant fasciation @pete and @ViewAhead ?

Not fasciation I dont think, but it depends on what the original plant looked like, almost some kind of reversion perhaps.
Leaves look bigger and so do the flowers, but its less compact.

This is what it looked like last summer, taken in mid June. You are looking at 5 plants there, 4 in the trough and one in front. Small, compact, floriferous would be the 3 adjectives that sprang to mind.

You have to admit the new growth this year looks different, could it be a self sown seedling, I know they do do that at times.

No, I definitely took cuttings and watched over them daily, murmuring words of encouragement from time to time. :) Nothing else sprouted in the pot alongside my handiwork.

            One of life's horticultural mysteries!

We moved here because we wanted a big garden and could only afford it because the house was dilapidated and the garden had been left to become a jungle - and Mrs Shiney got a job with a bank with a subsidised mortgage. :blue thumb: :hapydancsmil:

@shiney, when I was looking at your photos yesterday, I wondered if you had been on an outing to Wisley or somewhere and were showing us what you'd seen! :) You have an awesome range of plants.

@ViewAhead I did promise to start a thread about our garden but I never seem to have the time to do it. That is made more complicated by all our photos are on a drive linked to Mrs Shiney's computer and our computer free time rarely coincides. :noidea:

Prior to covid we used to open our garden every end of May bank holiday (just a day and a half) and get 500 people turn up. It was hard work getting the garden ready for it. :phew:

Ferula communis. A giant fennel from the Mediterranean down into East Africa. I've grown it for a number of years and this yer it got blown over and within a few days the flower buds had turned through 90° to grow upwards.

Fabulous @shiney - everything down there is so much earlier than up here, so it's nice to see photos of so many plants in full bloom. Many of my tulips have been eaten by slugs - like the daffs when in bud [] and many have rotted, which isn't unusual here, but very frustrating. There's a few botanical ones still coming through now though, and a few Ronaldos, which I've had for a few years.
I bit the bullet and bought a new camera, so I may try out a few pix soon. The Erythronium has just opened, so I'll try that.
My original Iberis [can't remember the variety] struggled this autumn/winter, but I have another clump grown from a cutting, which is just starting to flower, and 3 more cuttings which can be planted out this year

Ferula communis always flowers mid to late spring with me, the bronze fennel follows on later in the summer.

Blossom has made it through the morning largely intact. Phew!

May I ask if you could create a Gallery @Escarpment ? I’m very interested to see more of your garden. I have the impression you have a lot of wildflowers.
