@silu It was planted sometime between 2010 when that bed was made and 2012 where I've found a photo of it. I'd be inclined to buy three if you can. It's definitely not a thug and I think it's likely to be close to its full height and spread. We've not pruned it as per the book (don't bother looking those sort of things up :noidea:) and just cut bits off when they seem to get in the way. It has a straggly look, which is fine if the space is big enough.

Those Penstemons looked so healthy because we didn't get around to cutting them back and the winter has been fairly mild. They're in the new bed made last spring (when we had the 22 x 40yr old Leyllandii chopped down) so we had concentrated on improving the soil condition (it was awful from having just been full of conifers). So we added loads of garden compost and a ton or two of horse manure (you won't have problems getting that :heehee:).

The plants are fairly well protected as there is a 6ft fence behind them. The interesting thing is that they have layered themselves, so we now have new plants that we can put in elsewhere. I'll ask Mrs Shiney if she knows which variety they are.

Cheers @shiney thanks for all the advice. Will source 3 plants and give them a go. If they fail I'll blame you!:)

I don't know what it is but it would look better if the slugs/snails would leave it alone.

                        Hi Martin,

Don't know which one as there are loads of them but it's a Bergenia. Excellent ground cover plant.
