Yes Mark I grow acteas.....see picture above :)

Fantastic foliage plants, if you go for the purple varieties, and mine are now sending up scented white spikes of flowers.

Difficult? They thrive here in the rich soil of the back garden; need shade in theory but in practice I think they will lose much of the purple in the foliage. Here they are in dappled shade to full sun (in the afternoon)

Woodland? Again, they are theoretically but its all in the soil, viz., rich and moist.

I have James Compton, Brunette and Black Negligee.....all excellent and make large plants. The one above is almost 2 metres across and almost as tall; taller when it flowers:)

That plant came from down your way many years ago @Verdun , its ipomoea purpurea and could well be hardy with you in your coastal garden.

Think I might have got the name wrong also, Ipomoea indica, they changed it a few times, basically it perennial.

Thanks Pete, I may well accept your kind offer. I will see if I can get a plant first though....there are a few nurseries down here specialising in tender plants.
                      So possibly Indica?

OK let me know, believe it or not I still have the label, I used to save stuff like that, back then it was I. learii, which I think has now been changed to I. indica.

Starts out a deep blue in early morning but fades to a kind of deep pink by midday.
