WHAT'S LOOKING GOOD IN JULY 2018

Can anyone enlighten me as to if Uncinia rubra is full winter hardy...I'm considering this along with Sphagnum moss for the hair of my Flowerpot person...or if anyone can offer some suggestions which would make a nice hair doo for such...not to manicured I might add...it needs to look a little radical....thanks in advance...C

 

Lovely pictures @Verdun. I really like Tanna's sister, I have both tanna & tanna sister but they haven't come through the winter very well, surprised they didn't snuff it really. Put a few other lobelia Qvictoria in the border for now. I got another lobelia which is about to flower called hadspen purple, lobelia Tupa is the best I've ever seen it this year. What do you mean cut the heads off again ?

Struggled with my Eucomis they are only a inch or 2 tall, I am not sure whether to keep them in the GH or leave them outside they are in pots.

According to the RHS @BigC it isn't winter hardy, you be better looking at some carex. Doesn't sphagnum moss need lots of water/damp to thrive ?

 

Yes, BigC, uncinia unciniata is winter hardy down here but not sure how cold it gets with you.
Why not go for a carex like testacea or comans bronze that are very hardy

Perki, I thought about posting a picture of Hadspen Purple too today but it isnt quite at its best yet....another couple of days yet.
When I took the picture of tanias sister I didnt get the tops of the plants ....hence, "cut off the heads again"
I like these lobelias ...they seem unattractive to slugs, dont need staking and flower for ages.

Eucomis Sparkling Burgundy here gets to about 60 to 90 cm .....they thrive in mild climate

Ha ha, just noticed Pete suggested carex too.....great minds think alike

The slugs nibble at boths tanna's but not to the extent of queen Victoria, they supposed to not touch hadspens purple but will wait and see, they don't touch tupa which is supposed to be vulnerable

 

Well thats not a blooming problem where I live hahahahaha (might as well be under a waterfall over here) this recent heatwave is so unnatural for this godforsaken part of the world

Is that normal for it to be unbranched (is that a word?)? Last year I grew Cleome hassleriana for the first time in many years in as usual it was heavily branched.............

Carex comans 'Bronze Perfection' looked good in van Meuwen's catalogue @Verdun .. a nice ginger red but in other photos it looks like a dull straw....I would dearly like a little colour lol

Longk, first time growing cleomes for me. As always, I pinched back a few times but both White Queen and Violet Queen have grown like that. They grow fast dont they? I do prefer yours though as a multi branched plant.
Not sure I will grow cleomes again....maybe the white....as they self seed too freely; the thorns too are a drawback. I have an idea there are thornless, sterile varieties available so will check

 

I have looked for Cleome Senorita Rosalita or Blanca this year but I couldn't find any.
These hybrids are the thornless sterile series and I think are produced vegetatively and appear in Gcs late in the season. The ones I had last year were smaller than the usual seed grown ones.

@Verdun - I have plenty of seed from last years plants. Yup, they do grow fast - the trunks on mine were three or four centimetres thick when I pulled them out at the end of the season.

I kept my Pentas lanceolata going through the winter until the Beast from the East arrived. When you can pick 'em up in Lidl for a couple of quid you have to wonder if it was worth the effort.............
