Cant remember which one but probably most people would call it a weed, its some kind of Silphium.

A good shrub for dry gardens, Desert willow, Chilopsis linearis.

      Another dry one, Yucca flaccida.

          Was it that long ago.:yikes:
Yes pity it didn't survive, but even back then the postal services were a bit iffy and things always suffer through the post.
There are some good varieties of the plant now available, I think, if you ever wanted to try again, its actually scented when you get close.

I've got the cross, Chitalpa tashkentensis, at the top of a steep bank. Very big shrub now, but I reckon it would benefit from a hard prune. Do you prune the Chilopsis, @pete?

I've given it a hard prune back on a few occasions but it just really causes excessive growth a bit like pruning a Catalpa does.
Its taller than I would like it to be, to be honest, as the flowers are a long way up.

That's a tree! The Chitalpa is more spreading in habit, but a bit sparse, so I'll have a go at it this year. Thanks :)

It was shruby for a lot of years but turned into a leggy tree when I started cutting it back.
Must admit the pictures I've seen of Chitalpa are bit more spreading, do you know if they are grafted as I'm struggling to get cuttings to root.
Mine has become a bit closed in by other stuff over the years so that is not helping the leggy effect.

I planted some Verbena "Buenos Aires" last year and the flower stalks have grown, unsupported, to over 7 feet tall. Really impressive growth.
