We have a number of Veronicastrum but they are only just coming into flower, much later than normal. The bees and butterflies love them when they are in full flower

Phytolacca were also late in flowering and went to seed very quickly. In a month or two they will look quite striking when the seed heads turn to a lovely shiny black colour.
    upload_2024-7-13_7-36-48.jpeg

Both pink and white Mallow seed themselves all over the garden and, like lots of other flowers that self-seed here, we leave them if they aren't in the way.

Hanging baskets aren't doing too well this year but they are colouring up nicely now
    upload_2024-7-13_7-36-48.jpeg

We had to take these down as the very heavy downpours were damaging them as the water poured over the gutters. We're not on mains drainage and the land drains from the downpipes have long since given up the ghost.

We keep some very tall Verbascum thapsus (Great Mullein) to keep the Mullein caterpillars off the Verbascum chaixii. This 10ft high

Some of our chaixii which attract the pollinators around our veg plot
    upload_2024-7-13_7-36-48.jpeg

The chaixii also self seed easily

      "THE BOSS :love30:"

Aye - and don't you forget it @shiney
Are those Scabious in your earlier pix? I love the dark ones. There's a garden near me which has a nice one in a little border at the edge of their plot. I might walk that way today and have a proper look. I never see the folk out there to ask which one it is.

Many hydrangeas are flowering round here - much earlier than usual. My white ones have emerging buds and are almost open. That's a good two or three weeks early. I'll do a pic once they're properly open. The lack of cold weather in spring has helped push them on. The oak leaf ones are about the same stage as normal though.

Some Hydrangeas that the Boss is preparing for me to sell at my clubs (a couple of thousand pounds for the charity so far this year)
        upload_2024-7-13_7-56-16.jpeg

        And these
        upload_2024-7-13_7-56-16.jpeg

And these Laurel. The very golden ones are popular as stand alone plants. They're just cuttings from part of our normal golden hedge that has produced some sports
        upload_2024-7-13_7-56-16.jpeg

We're cutting back some of the Rosemary and I shall trim the best off and give them away at my clubs. We'll probably cut another two lots like that. We also give away lots of stalks of bay leaves
        upload_2024-7-13_7-56-16.jpeg

The Boss has cut back six bucket loads of Nigella. Apart from them looking good in the garden they are excellent for flower arranging when they have gone to seed like this. She belongs to four flower arranging clubs (also gives talks on it) and gives these away.

@shiney, lovely photos. :dbgrtmb: What is the little purple flower beside Mrs Shiney's barrow of nigella? An anemone? Gorgeous colour.

That's the good thing about them, I usually prune mine in April before the new growth shows but had to cut some off a week ago as I was struggling to open the gate.

Are you sure you trimmed it and didn't give the secateurs to Stevie Wonder @wiseowl ?

I've had Fatsias in several gardens and they provide good background greenery all year round, so they're always useful here. Very tough - the plain ones anyway. We don't always get the flowers due to our conditions though. The annoying thing was that last year, when we had a very hot, and much better/longer growing season, I could have had some, but I decided to give mine a bigger tidy up in spring for various reasons. D'oh!

My SM Begonias ‘apple blossom’ are gorgeous in the hanging baskets. I love how the flower opens from a clam-shell bud, and this variety starts white and turns a blush pink. Notice the small female flowers are delicate and discreet compared to the sumptuous male blooms.

I think the show people remove the female flowers so that the strength goes to the males.

I take some off hoping the ‘energy’ goes into the males, but leave one on for the pollinators.

@Meomye Sorry but I don't know offhand :noidea:.

Pre- covid we used to open our garden for charity every year and raise a lot of money for a local charity. One day someone turned up at the door with that wheelbarrow and said that they had ordered one and had been delivered two of them. The supplier couldn't be bothered to pick the extra one up - so it was a gift.

That was at least ten years ago but I shall have a closer look to see whether there is a name on it.
