Ha ha, don’t tell them about the hostas Perki :)
I usually grow them in the ground and in pots unscathed at least until early September

Never grown Hostas in the ground now for a good few years, they use to look like delicate lace after the S&S's had finished with them. :yikes:Thankfully they don't seem bothered with them now they are all in pots. :dbgrtmb:

I had and now have again Hostas in the ground, BEER TRAPS, is what I say.

Buy some cheap deepish plastic bowls (Tescos £2 for 4 ) 1/2 filled with cheap beer, you know the really weak stuff, strategically placed and the S'n'S head for that and not the plants. Just empty the drunken (and drowned) so-and -so's out, re-fill with beer and go again. My partner and I reckon we have almost eradicated the S 'n' S from the garden, just a few odd 'uns every now and then. We empty out into the river for the fish / waterbirds.

Quite frustrating as there's one or two jobs I need to do.

But I quite like the view of our garden when it's raining, "even if I can't do nuffin'."

                            Thanks for that.
I'm very pleased how the new paved area drains. It's enclosed by rocks on all sides, so no way can the water run off the edges. It relies on the water seeping through the the joints of the loose-laid paving slabs.
Mind you, as they cover our former koi pool there's 20 tons of coarse eco-friendly hard-packed hardcore under them, which the water will go straight through. Our subsoil is quite sandy as our houses were built on former farmland and the area is part of the original River Mersey alluvial plain.

Thnks for that. But most of the hard work was done over thirty years ago. Now it's more a case of maintenance, plant swopping, adding others, weeding and pruning. Although that does take some time. But not as much as if we were into bedding plants and hanging baskets.
The big change was losing the koi pool, but it's the only thing I didn't do myself.
