If the families of the ladybirds get on well with clearing the whitefly (must take a photo of how bad the infestation is) I'll transfer some of them to the blackfly on the runner beans.

I watched G's World last night @shiney , and they were talking about methods of preventing blackfly, especially on things like runner beans. I wasn't really paying a lot of attention, but a chap had planted parsnips in among his, and the flowers were then attracting predators in large numbers.
I think Monty Don also removed the top section of the beans which had the biggest infestation, and apparently it doesn't affect the overall health or production.
Not something I grow, usually just sugar snap peas for us, and we don't really get infestations of blackfly [or whitefly] so I can't say how useful any of that is.
It must take you ages just to photograph your plants, never mind actually caring for them!

I love your house @Punkdoc, and the garden's not bad either :heehee:
Nice place for your bench @Perki , although I wonder if you get much chance to sit in it. I don't use mine very often, and even when I do, there's always something you see that needs attention. :)

That yellow dicentra [I'll stick with that name for now!] could be very useful for me @NigelJ ,if it would grow well enough here....

@fairygirl Yes, it does take a long time with the camera - and I delete most of the pictures I take - but I do thank the plants for being so lovely. :heehee:

With the blackfly, I usually just hose them off the beans. There are companion plants that can be grown alongside other plants to deter or help with veggies. Companion Planting Chart and Guide for Vegetable Gardens

I can't use them directly around the beans as there is no free ground because I grow the beans through a porous membrane but I do have pollinator plants around the outside of the veggie area.

Not the stage we are at this year - yet

And I grow them overhead to get a bigger crop

Thanks @fairygirl, I am up your way at the moment. Stayed on Loch Lomond last night and am heading up to Gairloch today, stopping in Applecross for an early supper.

Daylily - I think it is called Green Ripple - and the very pretty flowers of Malva Alba.

Great to see so many gardens looking well. Took a break from harvesting garlic last weekend to take a few of the plants looking interesting here. Hope I am after fixing the uploading glitch I was getting.

@fairygirl I've taken a picture this morning' which I will post here and currently it's climbed well up into the Acer behind it. It's fairly resilient as it's come back from me removing a neighbouring bamboo which cut it down to ground level. the following year I hoed most of the shoots off it whilst weeding and then trod on the rest. The RHS give it as hardiness H4 -5 - -10°C.
It's pretty easy from seed and you could possibly grow it as an annual like nasturtiums.

Unfortunately like most people on the forum I suspect I don't sit on the bench much @fairygirl , I use it slight more now its near the back door instead of top of the garden .

I should have said @shiney, that I was probably trying to teach my granny to suck eggs, as I'm sure you've tried most things with the blackfly! I just found it quite interesting, and the timing was right with you saying that earlier, so I thought I'd mention it. I'd guess most people do the same as you - hosing or hand wiping them off. Always difficult to know if these things are worth trying too. I'd have thought with the amount of plants you have, there would be plenty to attract predators, so I'm not sure how brilliant an idea it really is! :)
Hope the weather stays fair for you @Punkdoc . It's been very much the usual mix of everything this month, although a lot drier here for the first couple of weeks. Daughter's 30th birthday is on Thursday, so it'll probably rain :heehee:

Having the bench nearby does make a difference @Perki. I failed miserably today in terms of sitting for very long on mine!

                              Thanks @NigelJ . Very nice.
Apologies- I forgot to reply to your post about it yesterday. That was my thought too, about growing it as an annual if it didn't manage to survive year on year as a perennial. It would work well with various other plants I have.
Plenty of suppliers seem to have it so I might just get some... :)

I love G. 'A. Folkard', and have had it in other gardens. I could do a with a couple more geraniums to fill the colour gap through June, between the earlier ones I have, and summer flowering plants. I love the strong pinks, and have been considering a few already.
