What's Looking Good In May 2013

I'm fussy about that, and in my garden I only retain the ones that I have grown from colour/variety-specific seed.

 

Speaking of invasive - the alpine strawberries that next door planted in a small pot 10 or so years ago have spread all the way around their garden but seem to like mine more, taking over wherever I let them - but so pretty !

Ive also been pulling them out of the wall the otherside of my garden where I suspect the birds (who get to eat most of the fruit) deposited the seed.

 

I quite agree!

Lots of the self- seeded ones are in washed-out colours which I dislike so much that I often try to pull them out, ( it is surprisingly difficult to do since they have such long roots). But I do let the nice coloured ones stay and at the same time I plant ones with long spurs. Funnily the ones I plant don't seem to self- seed which makes forming them into a colony a bit difficult .

 

Oh lord - I pulled all those when I moved in. Not a favourite of mine. I do though particularly like the dwarf forms with the upward facing blooms.

Many of those are sterile from what I'm led to believe.

 

I see what you mean now, I've had one come in to bloom last weekend and it's a sort of creamy-washed out-pinky colour. Not that nice looking really, I'll still let it grow for bee's and whatnot.

 

Dead head it then, or you could end up with hundreds that are even worse!
It's a lottery. I let a few mature, and this year I've maybe ended up with three keepers - one navy blue, a good pinky one (I generally dislike pink) and a lime green tinted white (maybe, it'll open over the next day or so). Plus a couple more to come which are yet to open.

 

The first seed grown Iochroma australis is in bloom!

longk Not seeing images on quite a few of your recent posts. The links to the Image look OK, but when I try them, on their own, I just get the Home Page (which might be disguising a "404 Not Found" error)

Dunno if you are seeing them OK (which might suggest a permission issue - i.e. visible to yourself, but not others)

 

I've had this on a few posts that I look at of other peoples too - been since all the changes. I'll check my settings(?).
