The Herbaceous Red Border - still some gaps that I need to plug for next year (that's where the Dahlias etc get planted, so need to a) fill the gaps but b) leave gaps for Dahlia planting

If you want one remind me before Shiney's next year. I've got some large ones that I don't want and I can dig one up for you. Ditto if we are both going to a Garden Meet later in the year,

shiney - love your Cytisus and Fremontodendron! And as for a Passion Flower already:love30:

@Kristen - that border is itching for a couple of choice red Salvia I think!

@Spruce - one of the most perfect Fuchsias there is IMO:blue thumb:

Salvia coccinea (I *think* that is the one I sowed last year) survived the winter, is quite tall, but is only just starting to flower. If I had had to sow seed again I don't think it would be nearly flower yet?

I have these, on order, which may help :)

                          Salvia 'Black Knight'
                          Salvia confertiflora
                          Salvia darcyi
                          Salvia discolor AGM
                          Salvia guajuanato
                          Salvia 'Indigo Spires'
                          Salvia x jamensis 'Hot Lips'
                          Salvia splendens 'Jimi's Good Red'

not all red of course :blue thumb:

Still struggling to find good, red, flowering plants ... I have a couple of Penstemons, but they don't do all that well here. When the Dahlias start flowering (a while yet, Bishop of Llandaff kicks it off at the start of July, but the main ones are probably mid July) I have a number of good'uns .... but I need more between now-and-then (I have some red Aquilegias for up-to-now, but they are going over now)

                            @longk Thanks, they're lovely plants.

I always caution people about Freemontodendron for two reasons. The first is that they are really trees and grow quite vigorously, and if you prune them they seem to grow even more vigorously. The second reason is that they have hair fine tiny burrs on the covers of the buds. For some dogs these can be a nuisance. Having said that - it's a wonderfully showy tree that flowers from April until the frosts.

The Cytisus is an interesting plant. Although it grows quite tall (ours is about 8ft at the moment) the stems are quite thin and whippy. So it tends to lean towards the light (it's by a border of trees and shrubs) and can droop very low if it rains. So I have to tie it back. I don't know if the main stem will thicken up much as we've had it for about 7 years. It took a couple of years before we got any flowers but this year there must be a couple of dozen coming.

The passion flower has part of it in almost greenhouse conditions. The body of the plant is growing in normal conditions alongside a fence and gets virtually no sunlight as it is sheltered by the fence, carport and house. It has grown along the fence, over another fence at right angles to it and into the pergola area. This faces west with fence to the east and north and the summerhouse to the south. It still gets lots of warmth from the sun because it has a clear Perspex roof. This morning I counted 21 fully open flowers and gave up counting the full buds after I reached a hundred. In the outside part there are about fifty small buds.

If it's not being eaten in my garden at the moment, it's looking unhealthy or covered in mildew. Except for my peach astilbe! Hoorah!
